Indian Reservations

The Mattaponi Indian Reservation was created from land long held by the Mattaponi by an act of the General Assembly in 1658, making it one of the oldest reservations in the country. Through the years both the Reservation’s physical size and the number of tribal members have diminished. The reservation presently encompasses approximately 150 acres, a portion being designated as wetlands. Although the tribal roll numbers 450 people, only 75 actually live on the Reservation. The Reservation sits on the banks of the Mattaponi River, one of the most pristine rivers in the eastern United States. Facilities on the Reservation today include living quarters, a Baptist Church, a Museum, a Trading Post, a Fish Hatchery, a Marine Science Center, and a Community Tribal building that was formerly the Reservation school. The Mattaponi Indian Reservation School building served as a school and church from 1890 to 1932. The school taught grades 1 through 8. The Baptist church was built in 1932, where the Mattaponi people continue to worship today. The school remained active until the 1960s, when Mattaponi children were able to attend public schools. The schoolhouse is currently used as the tribal center and pottery shop.

The Pamunkey Indian Museum and Cultural Center is a tribal museum located on the Pamunkey Indian Reservation. The museum focuses on the Pamunkey Indian Tribe’s history and way of life from 12,000 years ago through to the present. Early in the museum’s history a living Indian Village was a major component of the exhibition but no longer exists. Today glass display cabinets highlight the lifeways of the Pamunkey Indian Tribe and are the centerpiece of the museum. The museum displays combine replicas, primarily created by Errett Callahan, with original Native American artifacts donated by Tribal Citizens from their personal and familial collections. The display cabinets begin with information dating to 12,000 years ago (the Ice Age) and incorporate all archaeological timeframes through to the modern period. The displays in each cabinet are sub-divided into four themes, which are listed below. These themes are color-coded blue, green, yellow and red to assist the visitor in understanding the differences within each theme from one era to the next.

Rappahannock Tribal Center 5036 Indian Neck Road Indian Neck, VA 23148 Phone: (804) 769-0260 Email: info@rappahannocktribe.org Soon after Captain John Smith arrived at Jamestown in 1607, or so the story goes, he was captured by Opechancanough, the brother of the powerful Native chief Powhatan. English explorers wrote that Powhatan controlled a domain spanning much of what is now Virginia, from the state’s Piedmont region to the coast. Several tribes reportedly paid him tribute and lived within his Powhatan Confederacy. After Smith narrowly escaped execution through, he later claimed, the intervention of Powhatan’s daughter Pocahontas, he set off from Jamestown to explore and chart the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. Opechancanough had already taken Smith to a number of Native settlements during his captivity, including at least one on the Rappahannock River. Smith recorded that the Rappahannock peoples, who inhabited both sides of the eponymous waterway, were divided among eight communities, each with a leader, or werowance. Smith mapped or described 43 of their villages, reporting friendly encounters with some groups and hostility from others. Members of Virginia’s Rappahannock Tribe are at work with archaeologists to document the landscape they call home. Located in the southern part of Gloucester County along the York River, Machicomoco State Park is approximately 10 miles downriver from Werowocomoco. The landscape of Timberneck was most certainly associated with Tsenacommacah and Powhatan’s extensive Chiefdom. An open-air interpretive pavilion provides information on the culture, landscape and movement of Virginia Indians through displays and a walking path in the landscape. A paved trail follows along the main park road for walking or bike riding. The surrounding land provides diverse wildlife habitats, from open fields to woodlands and waterfront/marsh areas supporting deer, turkey, and many species of songbirds and birds of prey.

On the Potomac River's Northern Neck, this park offers many opportunities for family fun. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has an Olympic-sized swimming pool and an adjacent bathhouse, meeting area, snack bar, camp store and power-boat ramp. Murphy Hall, atop Horse Head Cliffs, offers a superb view of the Potomac River. Plus, my grandkids love to find shark's teeth!

Neighborhood Park

The Enchanted Forest is magical! Located in Warsaw, a short drive from Tappahannock and across the Rappahannock River, the Enchanted Forest is a must see. Tom Rhodes, who once owned the 12-acre plot of land, has been carving pop culture figures into trees since 2004. The town of Warsaw now owns the land and is in the process of turning it into a park. The public is invited to roam the trails that wind through the Enchanted Forest and look for the more than 80 figures. The coolest part is Mr. Rhodes still is carving, and you might have the opportunity to chat with him. Address: 211 Wallace St., Warsaw, VA Directions: From the AirBnB, drive to Rt. 17 and turn right. Continue into town and turn left at the second stoplight onto Rt. 360 toward Richmond County. Cross the bridge and continue past three stoplights. Just east of the stoplight at the intersection of Main St., (at the courthouse complex) turn right onto Wallace St. Drive .25 mile and on your left you will see a paved area where you can park. Follow the trails throughout the woods.
