The best Indian Restaurant in town! Dine in or takeaway. Eating at the famous Free House (once an old Church, now a quirky pub- a portal for the multitude of craft beers being created all over New Zealand.) over a pint is a good way to finish off the day. The Indian Café is housed in a little yellow bungalow on Collingwood Street. Open since 2002, it wasn’t the first Indian restaurant in Nelson but these days it’s considered one of the best, with locals filling the dining room pretty much every night of the week. The recently reopened East Street Vegetarian Café could be the most chilled-out hang-out spot in Nelson. In the main dining room, there’s a little stage where acoustic singer-songwriters perform. In the large garden out back, one wall is taken up by a colourful mural painted by an American artist. Staff are friendly and welcoming, the coffee is great and the meals are healthy and inventive. Vegetarians and meat lovers paradise with an electric bohemian decor. Occasionally fantastic music is also playing here.

When you take a concept as potentially classy as an oyster bar, whack a Michelin-trained chef – who’s worked with such notable kitchen wizards as Marco Pierre White and Gary Rhodes, by the way – out the back, and then set it in the Garden of Eden that is Nelson… Well, it was only going to end up going one way. Obviously the food is spectacularly fresh and inventive.

Hopgood’s is considered one of Nelson’s best restaurants, and it’s clear why it’s gained this reputation. The food is of a very high calibre, and comes out as fast as you want it to really. The staff are attentive and gauge your mood, so that if you’re lingering over something you don’t have to worry about them scooting over and rushing you. Conversely, if you’ve just hoovered up the Angus fillet in about 38 seconds, you’re not left waiting an eternity for the chocolate mousse to arrive. Although, when you’ve tried the chocolate mousse once, any time longer than three seconds is going to feel like an eternity the next time you order it. It’s out of this world.

This is decadence. This is wedding anniversary material, or the sort of gaff where you drop a knee and pop the big one. Lobster, truffle fries and cocktails with locally distilled gin are just a few of the delights that are in store for you when you walk into this tastefully decorated restaurant. It’s always worth gambling on the fish du jour – not really a gamble at all, as it’s always going to be great – or getting the fish platter for sharing on a date. This place is a sure-fire way to impress someone with your excellent taste in restaurants. It’s fine dining at its best.

Situated in what was a garden centre back in the 1970's and 80's, most of the cafe is in an enclosed courtyard with some inside tables in a cosy space next to the counter and kitchens. I love Deville's atmosphere - all kinds of Nelsonians and tourists come in for a coffee and their excellent food. Their date scones are big, full of dates and delicious, especially if you come in early when they are just out of the oven. Another favourite is the Caesar Salad. It is occasionally also a music venue at night. Deville can't be beaten as one of Nelsons many gems.

The Centre of New Zealand is so named as it was a central survey point in the 1800s. Start the Botanical Hill walk at the Reserve, where the first ever rugby game was played in New Zealand. From here, there are a couple of options to take you to the top where you will enjoy spectacular views over Nelson Tasman. Inspect the native plants or catch your breath on the platform seating. 20-60 minute walk depending on your age. From the summit, descend via one of Botanical Hill's other tracks. Or you extend your walk further by heading down the eastern side toward Branford Park to the Black Hole swimming hole and return via the Maitai Track. In the summer, take your togs to go for a swim.

There is a map at the start of the many entrances. The closest entrance to the track from this AirBnB is 12min away through a residential area full of historical homes at the end of Collingwood Street. A moderately hard walk up through the hills that form Nelson's backdrop. The Grampians are the big rolling hills behind Nelson, with pockets of regenerating native vegetation and exotic trees. Time: 45 - 70 minute walk (longer options available)

Natural sand formation. A beautiful walk and resting place. A internationally-renowned walk along the Nelson Te Pokohiwi/Boulder Bank is an opportunity not to be missed. The 8 km walk, from Boulder Bank Drive to 'The Cut', takes 2-3 hours one way. It is a natural spit of boulders, formed of the debris of land slips from the Mackay Bluffs, swept southwards by sea currents over 10,000 years. History and culture Māori camped on the bank and fished there. They used boulders from the bank - some up to 50 kg - to hammer the rough forms of stone tools from quarries in the nearby hills. The shelter offered by Te Pokohiwi/Boulder Bank was a major factor in choosing the site of Nelson. In 1848 a beacon was erected near the end of the bank and, in 1862, the cast iron lighthouse building that remains today. In 1906 a cut was made in the bank to allow easier passage to Nelson Harbour for shipping. 'The Cut' now separates Haulashore Island from the bank.
