Great for a bite to eat, or to just to sit on the terrace with a drink and soak up the lovely view. It also has beautiful grounds to walk around - with a pretty lake in front of the Manor, a stunning water feature and the pretty River Churn running through the grounds with 2 resident swans, plenty of wildfowl and you’ll also sometimes see regular visitors such as heron, egret, kingfisher and deer.

Larger and more commercial than Cirencester, Cheltenham has many high-street and independent shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. The Promenade (known by locals as "The Prom") at the top end of town has more of the independant shops, and the closer you walk down the Prom to the town centre you will see more high-street chains. Cheltenham's label as a Spa town dates back to the discovery of mineral springs in 1716. The town is famous for its Regency architecture and is said to be "the most complete regency town in England, with many of the buildings being listed. Famous for its racecourse, Cheltenham is the home of jump racing and hosts the Cheltenham Festival and Gold Cup every March, which sees the town packed with race goers. It is also known as The Festival Town with festivals year round celebrating music, science, jazz, literature, food and drink.

Sudeley Castle & Gardens has played an important role in England’s history for over 1,000 years and the castle rooms and exhibits contain many fascinating treasures, from ancient Roman times to the present day. Outside, the castle is surrounded by a breathtaking 1,200 acre estate and ten award-winning gardens. The centrepiece is the Queens Garden, so named because four of England’s queens – Anne Boleyn, Katherine Parr, Lady Jane Grey and Elizabeth I – once walked upon the original Tudor Parterre. The Pheasantry at Sudeley houses a collection of 16 rare and endangered species of birds from around the world as part of Sudeley’s programme of breeding and conservation. Sudeley Castle & Gardens is also the only private castle in England to have a queen buried within its grounds – Katherine Parr, the last of Henry VIII’s six wives. Today visitors can explore the beautiful 15th century church where she lies entombed.

Chipping Campden is quite simply one of the finest towns in the Cotswolds – well-preserved and full of history, but also full of life and bustle. Its elegant High Street is a delight, described by the historian, G.M. Trevelyan, as “the most beautiful village street now left in the island”: a broad gentle curve flanked on either side by an unbroken sweep of buildings covering a host of architectural styles, with buildings dating back to the 14th century. In the centre of the High Street stands the iconic Market Hall, now in the care and ownership of the National Trust, and built in 1627 by Sir Baptist Hicks to provide shelter for traders selling perishable goods, like cheese and butter, or precious goods, like silks. The paving stones have been worn away by hundreds of years of busy trade – and it’s all too easy to imagine the noise and bustle of traders long ago. Sir Baptist Hicks was a very wealthy silk merchant and vast and extravagant 17th century monuments to him and his family can be found in the town’s church. St James' Church, the town’s most visible landmark, is one of the greatest ‘wool’ churches in the Cotswolds, built with money from the flourishing medieval wool trade. It is famous for having one of the oldest altar tapestries and largest brasses in England.

The village of Bibury was referred to as the “most beautiful village in England” by William Morris and is well worth a visit. Bibury Trout Farm is one of Britain’s oldest, and most attractive, trout farms. Founded in 1902, by the famous naturalist Arthur Severn to stock the local rivers and streams with the native Brown Trout, it now covers 15 acres in one of the most beautiful valleys in the Cotswolds, the Coln Valley. The crystal clear waters of the Bibury spring provides the essential pure water required to run the hatchery, which spawns up to 6 million trout ova every year. On site is a fish shop stocking a wonderful range of wines, deli. products and preserves as well as quality breads, etc, and of course trout products including smoked and fresh trout. For the more adventurous, you can catch your supper and they have a BBQ area where you can cook it too!

Purton lies on the southern bank of the River Severn about 1⁄2 mile north of the port of Sharpness. The Severn is the longest river in the United Kingdom. Known as the Purton Ships Graveyard or Purton Hulks the area has a large number of purposely abandoned boats and ships that were beached on this area of the River Severn with the aim of reinforcing the river bank. A riverbank collapse in 1909 led to concerns about the strong currents of the River and its erosive power putting at risk the Gloucester and Sharpness canal so a quick resolution was required. Between 1909 and 1970’s at regular intervals barges, trows and schooners were taken out on the tide, towed by a tug towards the shore and then charged up the bank. Holes were then made in the hull to allow the tides to deposit the silt inside. Most vessels were beached in the 1950’s and now as a result the ground level has built up meaning you can now see a few barges lying on top of earlier ones. This unusual site with the vessels in considerable decay forms the largest ship graveyard in the mainland and explanatory boards help visitors understand more about the vessels and site.

Leckhampton Hill and Charlton Kings Common lie above Cheltenham and are a favourite walking spot with views out across Cheltenham, and the Severn Vale. Areas on the hill are designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to the biological interest of the unimproved calcareous grassland and for its geological exposures. Historical features on the hill include an Iron Age hillfort and long barrow. Old tramways criss-cross the hill from the days of limestone quarrying and the remains of kilns and quarries are still very much in evidence.

Just down the road, this secret Cotswold garden at Cerney House, high above the lovely Churn Valley, the walled garden at Cerney House has a lovely atmosphere and you can admire the plants as well as listening to the birdsong from the surrounding woods. See the old fashioned roses along the trellis, herbaceous borders and wonderful scents. In April there are lovely displays of tulips joining the last of some very special daffodils. There is a well labelled herb garden and working kitchen garden. The 3.5 acre red brick walled garden has many colourful borders and seating areas. In Spring wander through the Bluebell woods down to the front garden which has more colourful borders. In February and early March there are masses of snowdrops in the gardens, with a small woodland trail.

'The Queen of the Cotswolds', the garden at Sudeley Castle surrounds a fine Castle which was desecrated by Cromwell in the Civil War. Designed as a continuation of the Castle, the inspiration for the gardens draws on and reflects Sudeley’s rich history. Eminent landscape designers including Lanning Roper, Rosemary Verey, Jane Fearnley-Whittingstall, Charles Chesshire and, more recently, Sir Roddy Llewellyn have all been involved in the design and layout of the gardens. There are 14 acres, the highlight being the Queens Garden, built on an Elizabethan parterre and filled with old-fashioned roses. Don't miss the Tudor Knot Garden, Secret Garden and the Carp Pond next to the Tithe Barn. Some great topiary! The Gardens are planted to appeal throughout the open season.

At Sezincote House and Garden the Indian influence is seen in the drive that goes over an Indian Bridge with statues of bulls. Water features include a temple pool, Canal, stream bordered with bog loving plants. More formal gardens to the side of the house with elephant statues. Past this and up the hill a new wild flower meadow has been established. Fine trees include copper beeches, cedars, limes and yews with many unusual shrubs. This is our Autumn secret, the tints are marvellous and great for photos. It is also fairly quiet and away from the crowds Many architectural items give these gardens a distinctive feel. Take time to see inside the House which is superb.

When is the best time to visit Newark Park for its snowdrop displays? Every year in February and early March at Newark Park there are beautiful displays of snowdrops and aconites. Not only this but there are breath-taking views and beautiful scenery. Follow paths down to the boating house or take some of the longer walks within the estate. At the time of adding this entry dogs on leads are allowed in the grounds. The house was a hunting lodge but upgraded to a house in the late 18th century when the pleasure grounds are likely to have been created, with a serpentine lake, a folly and walks. The gardens are not extensive but are worth a visit for those visiting the House.

Opened in 1825, Pittville Park is the largest ornamental park in Cheltenham and features the magnificent Pump Room and lakes. This park is given a grade 2 listing under the English Heritage register of historic parks and gardens, with the Pump Room as a grade 1 historic building. Pittville Park is divided in two by Evesham Road. Most people are familiar with the eastern side of the park, which is overlooked by Pittville Pump Room, and home to the main children's play area and the aviaries where you'll find our popular birds and bunnies. However, to the west of Evesham Road lies the much larger western park with its more natural layout and small areas of woodland. Here you will find the larger 'lower lake' where you can fish during the fishing season, and there is a smaller children's play area along with tennis courts, a pitch and putt golf course and a skate park.
