This is a great sushi and steak-house that is less than a block and a half away from my house, and within an easy 7-minute walk. It's super-convenient, open fairly late, and I've always had a great experience there.

Right next door to my other local favorite, Dos Mary's is a great little Tex-Mex bar and grill with breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. Everything I've had there has been really good, and you can walk to it in about 7-minutes, since it's merely a block and a half away, right next door to Nagoya Sushi and Steakhouse!

This is a great Mediterranean place about 4 blocks away from my house, which is a very convenient 10-minute walk through my neighborhood. It's in a little shopping center that also hosts several other fast-food choices as well, and even a small coffee shop! For folks who enjoy such things, Almarah also has a separate, enclosed outdoor hookah lounge as part of their neighboring establishment, and they stay open late for those who enjoy socializing and snacking.

Don Don is a really tasty little family-owned place that specializes in Chinese rice-bowl dishes of a variety of flavors and kinds, but also has several choices of Ramen soups as well as a few other Japanese style meals. I love their Orange Chicken bowl, and they are one of the very few places I've found who create their batter-fried chicken chunks in such away that they stay wonderfully crispy throughout the meal! One of my favorite dishes isn't on the menu, however, but they'll be glad to make it for you upon request! It's call Jalapeno Chicken with Black Bean Sauce, and it's delicious!

Like many places nearby my house, Anjappar is only about 10 minutes away on foot (5 small neighborhood blocks), and is a great local place with delicious, spicy, traditional Indian food. I've been told "anjappar" actually means spicy food, and it's important to pick "level 1" on your food if you'd rather it be gentler to the taste buds. For me, this place is amazing, and utterly authentic in its offerings. It has both meat and vegetarian dishes, and its curry is wonderful. I also love the little tea service you can get with a creamy and delicious chai tea.

Like many of the restaurants in my area, this great little barbeque place is actually one of the best in northeast Austin. Every single one of their offerings are served a-la-carte, and weighed up to create whatever kind of plate you'd like for yourself, or even create a selection of fantastic things for a whole family or group you might want to bring. They are only open for select hours and days throughout the week, and generally only for early lunch and dinner (when they begin running out of all their delicious meats that are smoked on-sight)! Everything about them, from their meat dishes to their side-dishes and desserts, are fantastic!

I love Torchy's Tacos, and though it's an Austin chain of taco places, the one near me is really great and just a 10-minute walk away in the same shopping center as our local HEB grocery store. Check them out online to see their menu of specialty tacos! I really love their "Trailer Park" (with chunks of fried chicken strips inside) and I always get it "Trashy", where they add melted nacho cheese! There's really something there for everyone, and I've found two of their tacos to be plenty (especially if you go with another person and shared some nachos and queso dip).

For something a little further afield, but still in the local area, Moonie's Burgers is just a mile or so down Anderson Mill from my neighborhood. They have a selection of fantastic gourmet burgers served usually on a type of sweet Hawaiian bun, and you can get fries, tater-tots, or chili-covered versions of both. They have great shakes there as well!

One of my favorite little places to go for both Korean food and sushi in my own neighborhood, Osaka Mansun is in a shopping center merely a mile or so down Anderson Mill from my house, on the left, just across the street from Moonie's Hamburgers. They have quite a number of excellent Korean dishes, but if you love sushi they have a glorious selection you can pick from a little plastic binder they have with beautiful color photos of all their delicious sushi offerings!

In the same shopping center, just a little further down from Moonie's Hamburgers about two miles from my house down Anderson Mill road, you'll find a local favorite Italian restaurant that has been here for over 30 years. Truly family owned (you might even meet the patriarch of the family wandering between tables greeting guests), this place is one of my favorite Italian places in town. On several nights a week they have a singer crooning out old-style rat-pack hits you'd expect to hear in a New York Italian restaurant. It's very homey and comfortable, with really great traditional plates, as well as pizza and delicious desserts.

Having lived in Thailand as a little kid, I've got to say that Muangthai must be one of my favorite Thai places in town. Only about two miles from my house down 620, just under and across 183, turning left into the shopping center there, you'll find it tucked away just past an Indian market grocery store. If you love Thai food yourself, every single one of their dishes is fantastic, and their thom-kha soup is the best in town, by my estimation. They have succulent satay chicken, delicious dumplings, and fresh "Monsoon Rolls" with delicious crispy lettuce and rice noodles on the inside with shrimp and pork filling to be dipped in savory peanut sauce... Their daily Thai curries and Pad-Thai noodles are great as well!

It's hard to decide whether to put this into sightseeing or the food scene, because the Oasis and its surrounding shopping areas and other restaurants have been a place to go as a lookout over Lake Travis since before I moved to Austin in 1987. Back then it was a large wooden structure perched on the edge of the cliffs overlooking the lake until it was struck by lightning and burn to the ground. Not to be daunted, the owners rebuilt the place out of stone and brick in spectacular fashion, to include other restaurants, little ice-cream and candy shops, and other "Austin-exclusive" places of business surrounding it. The food is good, it's always busy on the weekends, and the view for all its many outside decks are some of the best in Austin's lakeside hill-country.

Sightseeing

If you've been visiting downtown Austin throughout your stay, and want to take a day just to relax in the local neighborhood, there's actually a nearby aquarium attraction just big enough to let the kinds enjoy something fun without it requiring an all-day commitment. Just down Anderson Mill road from my house, about two miles away, is the Austin Aquarium. It's not an enormous park, merely a smaller indoor attraction with a variety of aquarium displays as well as several interaction tanks where you can feed and touch some of the animals on exhibit. There's even a little nectar-feeding opportunity with some bright-feathered Lorikeets there, and the ability to meet Lemurs, or feed Stingrays, Sharks, Iguanas, and Tortoises! My younger relatives want to go there every time they visit, and we usually finish off the evening by going to play video-games and vintage pinball games at a local place called Pinballz, followed by burgers at Moonies.

City/town information

As Texas' capital and live-music destination like none other, Austin hosts a number of events that folks love to travel here to experience. From SXSW to the ACL Festival held here every year, to a variety of other events and locations that Austin is famous for, like kite festivals at Zilker Park, variously-themed food and film festivals, Austin is a place that draws a huge number of tourists and business travelers. Whomever you may be, there's a lot to explore in downtown Austin depending on what's going on during any particular month or weekend. The same goes for the smaller cities and surrounding towns, such as historic Round Rock, Cedar Park, Lakeway, and Georgetown, each with their own histories and attractions.
