Local Walks and Sightseeing

Pen y Fan is a fantastic walk and a must-do when in Brecon if you enjoy walking. It is the highest mountain in Southern Britain at 866 metres above sea level. Sitting next to it, is Corn Du at 873 metres. Allow two hours to comfortably walk to the peak of Pen y Fan. There are different routes you can take to walk Pen y Fan. A great way to access the walking route is from the ‘Pant ar Daf’ car park which is just south of Storey Arms on the A470. It takes around 15 minutes to drive there from the property. You can catch the Stagecoach Bus (T4) on the Brecon to Merthyr Tydfil bus route at the Brecon Interchange bus stop and this will take you to Storey Arms. The Brecon Interchange bus stop is about a 10-15 minute walk from the property. There is a Stagecoach Bus app that provides information to help plan your journey times, mobile tickets and live bus tracking.

I recommend walking the Brecon Canal. You can walk from the property, through Brecon Town to the Canal Basin. It is a grade 1 walk and perfect for a leisurely and peaceful walk that provides both heritage and wildlife along the way. One of my favourite walks is the Canal Basin to Brynich Lock. There and back takes up to 2 hours. There are places to sit along the way, you can watch the canal boats gently tug by, learn about the canal when it was at its industrial peak (from information panels) and enjoy the lush green trees, birds singing, the farm life and ducks with their brood of ducklings swimming along the canal. If you wanted to make it a day of walking the canal, you will find pubs along the way where you can stop and have a bite to eat and something to drink. The canal is also a great place to cycle, and again, you will find pubs along the way to rest and have something to eat and drink.
