Enjoying nature

Free access to the South Platte river, 15 minutes from the house great for swimming, fishing, hiking, or just sitting by the river. You don't need to go to this campground, this just gets you to the correct area and then you can set up whereever you want on the river (make sure your car is off the road when you park). In the summer you can rent tubes at the Tumbling Trout in Lake George (call ahead on weekends) and tube down the river. There is the South Platte Trail just a bit past this campground which is a great day hike. Nearby there is dispersed camping on National Forest land and endless ATV trails.

The reservoir itself is great for fishing and bringing a boat. The drive to this location is so beautiful (which is the main reason I am recommending it), and there are hikes and historical markers along the way. This is not really an area that non-locals know about. There aren't really any towns out this direction, so make sure to pack a lunch! It's really just an awesome scenic drive, and there are great places to fly fish all along the Tarryall Creek.

8 dollars for entry and the drive itself is so worth it. This beautiful canyon is ten minutes from the house, and has some of the states best rock climbing & fly fishing. In the summer it's a great place for a picnic or a swim!

Amazing independent ski resort that rarely gets crowded. Some of the best tree and gulch skiing in Colorado! This is where I have my season pass, and I absolutely adore this mountain. Hit the hot springs on your way home!

This is different than Eleven Mile Canyon, because it's the giant lake that connects to the canyon (although you cannot drive directly out of the canyon to this park). They rent boats and have lots of hiking and fishing, certainly is a day well spent. I believe it's $8 for admission. Keep in mind people and dogs cannot swim here because it's a reservoir for our drinking water.

They have a variety of programs - you can just do the normal tour which is fun because you learn about different wolves and they get them all to "howl" at a point on the tour, or you can pay more money for wolf encounters where you can actually play with them a feed them. My favorite part is actually the fox exhibit right by the entrance - when they are out and about they are so playful and amazing to watch.

Great adventure for those who want to get off the beaten path and do something only locals know about. AMAZING views and no tolls as you go through the burn scar from the Hayman fire (which means you can see MILES in every direction). This is a dirt road that is pretty well maintained (I can do it in my Kia), so you don't NEED 4 wheel drive or good clearance in good weather but it's always a good idea to have these. Only do this drive in good weather and if you aren't nervous about heights. This road leaves off CR-77 (the road that goes to Taryall Reservoir), and you can technically make a loop where you go through this campground and then come out by Cheeseman Reservoir off of CR 67 by Deckers . From here take CR 67 (paved) back to woodland and then 24 back to Florissant. Lara is HAPPY to show you what I mean on a map, the whole loop will take about 3 hours while it will be 1.5-2 hours if you just go out and back.

This trail is one that a lot of tourists do, so be prepared for that if you are going at a peak time or in the summer. Parking is limited. You park by an abandoned mine entrance which is cool, and then you can choose to go to the waterfall (easier) or to pancake rocks (a lot of climbing but a gorgeous vista awaits at the top). There is certainly a climb involved for both hikes, so if you are still acclimating to the altitude, don't want a work out, or if the ground is icey/snowy I don't recommend this hike. There's a stream that crosses the trail for dogs to cool off in! This trail is named because historically a guy used to steal horses from Cripple Creek (the local mining town)and hide them at this location by the stream until he could re-sell them!

Only open in the summer, this is an AWESOME local activity for both kids and adults - I am an adult and go here all the time with my adult friends haha. In Florissant we have a unique rock known as "paper shale" which, one you learn about it, you will start noticing all around town. At this quarry, they give you a box of paper shale and bunch of tools, then they teach you how to "open" the shale to look for the fossils that are trapped in this rock. This activity is a great one to pair with the Florissant National Monument so that you know how this rock forms and why it contains these fossils! You can keep whatever fossils you find.

Awesome mine tour and a beautiful drive to get there! You will be taken down in a mine shaft about 1,000 ft so not for those that can't handle enclosed spaces! Make a day of this by taking Teller 1 (leaves from Florissant, next to the Thunderbird) to Cripple Creek and enjoying that very cool historic town with various attractions. Then make sure to drive through the town of Victor so you drive by the MASSIVE and currently active Newmont Gold Mine. If you have time check out the Vindicator Valley Trail Head for a free cool hike through old mine shafts and equipment, and check out the free Newmark Mine overlook (on the road that goes behind the Molly Kathleen mine). Take 67 back to the town of Divide for a scenic drive that is different from the way you came.

Not for the faint of heart, because you will be driving up the beautiful mountain you can see from the patio. There will be hairpin turns, areas without guard rails, and sometimes snow in the summer! But it is so beautiful, and there is a new state of the art visitors center on the summit (as well as fresh donuts which tourists INSIST are better because of the altitude). Keep your eyes peeled for big horned sheep, marmots, and pikas (species that only live in our high altitude ecosystems). Plan to do this early in the day because we often get afternoon thunderstorms, and they will close the road if the weather is dangerous. You can also hike this mountain from the Craggs Trail out of Divide or the Barr Trail out of Manitou Springs. There is also a train that goes up it which leaves from Manitou Springs.

Really unique mountain town with ALOT of history and "hauntings". This was the proposed capital of Colorado due to the Gold Rush that took place, but now it is one of the two locations in Colorado where you can gamble/go to casinos. Look in the blue binder for the pamphlets for all the attractions in this area and while you are up there be sure to look for the only mobile National Monument in the USA, a herd of donkeys that are the decedents of the donkeys used historically in the mines. They just roam around the town freely and you can buy treats to feed them and pet them (if you can find them! they can literally go wherever they want). Stop in the Cripple Creek Heritage Museum to learn about the best things to do in the area and learn the history of this unique town. While in the area check out the town of Victor!

There are other hot springs near Buena Vista that are less expensive if you want to pay less, but these are so beautiful and I think they are worth the admission. You can use the man-made pools or sit in the natural river where the hot spring water comes out. In the river you can use the river rocks to build your own "tub" or just use one that other people have built. There is also a spa and an adult only section of these springs which is great for getting away from the crowds- if you are interested in how to access that area (if its not clear online) give me a text. The drive to the hot springs is gorgeous, with an amazing view of the Collegiate Mountains as you descend into Buena Vista so you will certainly get a scenic drive in addition to this attraction. I think it's worth it to check out the cute mountain town of Buena Vista - they have a brewery, distillery, shopping, and many restaurant options! The town has been requiring masks consistently throughout the pandemic so make sure you have some on you in case that is still the case.

If you are up in this area this is a free, 3 story attractions that I absolutely recommend stopping at. It's a beautiful new facility with interactive exhibits and a theatre that shows the history of the regions. my favorite part is the amazing view from inside the facility, both of the neighboring mountain ranges and the adjacent active gold mine.

If you are into this kind of museum this one has an extensive collection of prison history and artifacts -the museum shares a stone wall and armed towers with an active prison that has been in continuous operation since 1871. Exhibits feature infamous inmates such as Alfred Packer (convicted of cannibalism), Antone Woode ( a twelve-year old convicted of murder), and the historically used electric chairs. There's also the Outlaws museum in Cripple Creek which you should also check out if you liked this!

I love arcades, so I love this. It's an open air arcade that has a lot of new games and class old games. It gets a little busy in the summer. Manitou Springs is also fun to explore, there are 8 natural mineral springs around the town that you can find and taste (they all taste different. It's a hippy/ touristy town at the base of pikes peak. This town is also the nearest place you can buy recreational marijuana (they are adding it to cripple creek soon but at the time I am writing this is not yet open).

Huge patio with an amazing view of Pike's Peak. your If the weathers nice bring your frisbees to the frisbee golf course, or sit out on the patio with your dogs. They do serve food (food truck on the weekends, they have flatbreads, chicken wings, creme brulee etc). Những gì cần đóng gói

Remember, you are at 9000 ft!

Bring layers, Colorado weather is famous for changing quickly. Throw in a windbreaker or rain jacket if you have one. Avoid high elevations when there are thunderstorms - at this altitude the lightning can be dangerous. Wear sunscreen, even if you think you don't need it. High altitude means more UV rays and more skin damage Drink more water than you normally do. The dry climate and altitude can cause dehydration. Drink less alcohol than you would at home, you will feel it more here. If you think you are experiencing altitude sickness, head to lower elevation (Colorado Springs).

Florissant is amazing for stargazing

Last year, the Florissant National Monument in our town received the International Dark Sky Places designation. What this means is our location has very little human made light pollution and so we can see more stars and see space more clearly than many other parts of the country. As a town we are limited with how much light pollution we emit so that we can keep our skies dark! Make sure to enjoy the beautiful views of our night sky and download the Skyview Lite app to help you identify constellations and planets!

Staying with a local

I am able to do local tour guiding upon request, and we can take my car if you want to do something that requires 4 wheel drive. I can share information about the history and ecology of our local area, and let you see Colorado through a local lens. If it's something that isn't far I can probably do it for free, and if its a longer tour I may charge. Reach out if you are planning something that you might want me to join/ help with.
