Fabulous white-sand beaches

Sanur beach is about 10 min drive from our house. While there are beaches closer, they are mostly black sand and/or rocky and have big waves. Sanur beach is over 4K long, with lots of sections, some local, some more touristy, with countless cafes and restaurants. The beach is perfect for kids and families because the water is calm and warm (25° - 32°). A reef about 100 yards from keeps the waves small (unlike Kuta’s big and often dangerous waves and undertow. The beach itself is generally wide and flat, with many small jetties to help preserve the sand and Gazebo’s on their ends where you can picnic or get a massage. You can find many water sports like windsurfing, kayaking, jet skiing, and paddle boarding https://www.hotels.com/go/indonesia/sanur-beach

Go to the section of the beach between Gado Gado and Double Six where you will find a string of restaurants with loads of bean bag chairs out front. Some have their own live music for sunset. The beach is gorgeous and great for swimming (though beware of the under-toe!!). The whole energy of the place is hopping and fun and festive.

Temples

This temple is recommended by my Bali Antrhopologist friend Toni because it is peaceful, not touristy, small, up in the mountains, and surrounded by rice terraces. Nearby is a world heritage sight. One suggestion would be to make a two-day adventure out of it, and spend a night at Prana Dewi – a yoga/meditation resort in the mountains. https://www.balipranaresort.com/

This temple - also recommended by my anthropologist friend Toni - is near Bangli. It is one of the nine principal temples in Bali. There will be other tourists there, but not many. The temple and surroundings are beautiful.

At the bottom of a lush river valley running through the little town of Tampaksiring just northeast of Ubud, lies one of Bali's largest ancient temple complexes, the Candi Gunung Kawi. Comprising a collection of ancient 'Candi' or shrine reliefs carved directly into the face of a rock cliff, this is definitely one of the most stunningly unique archeological sites besides being an important sacred place for the Balinese. https://www.indonesia.travel/us/en/destinations/bali-nusa-tenggara/bali/gunung-kawi-temple

Balinese Dance

This is a very famous Ramayana monkey chant dance – perhaps the most accessible, especially if you have kids, as they love the rhythmic ‘cak cak’ song. You can find it at various locations. This one is in Uluwatu (https://www.uluwatukecakdance.com/) but there are also daily performances at the Arts Center in Denpasar (https://www.balitravelhub.com/attractions/bali-art-center/) among other places.

The Putra Barong & Kris Dance is a local stage in Batubulan that shows the popular Balinese Barong and Kris dagger dance drama. It is often an included stop on popular tour itineraries to Ubud and its outlying areas, particularly to the goldsmiths and silversmiths communities of Celuk and Mas in the Gianyar regency. The shows are held daily and in the mornings only, with dancers and the gamelan troupes made up mostly of local villagers.

Devdan is a 90-minute theatrical show that combines spectacular dance choreography and state-of-the-art lighting, audio and special effects. It tells of a boy and girl who decide to break away from their mundane tour group, only to stumble upon an enchanted treasure chest filled with various cultural objects from the different islands in the Indonesian archipelago – that’s where the show's subtitle, ‘Treasure of the Archipelago’ fits in. Their adventure goes on from there, as each ‘discovery’ of an item from the treasure chest brings on a corresponding scene onto the stage, complete with acrobatics on the floor and even aerial silk dancers suspended from the ceiling.Read more Location: Komplek ITDC Nusa Dua, Nusa Dua, Badung, Bali 80363, Indonesia Open: Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 7.30 pm to 9 pm Phone: +62 (0)361 770 197

Lots of Balinese say that if you want to see what Bali looked like in the old days, visit Batuan Village. The village is comprised of traditional Balinese compounds and natural surroundings. Most of the villagers work as craftsmen or artists. It is located about 10 kilometers south of Ubud and about 15 kilometers northeast of Denpasar.

Lying between Petanu and Pakerisan Rivers and just few minutes drive from the Elephant Cave, Yeh Pulu is a 14th century site. 'Yeh’ means 'water' or 'spring', and 'pulu' is a Balinese name for a stone water container. It’s an ancient complex of rock carvings of various images of Wayang characters (shadow puppets) and common people, which form a scene of Balinese village life in the early days, and include Lord Ganesha, horsemen, an ascetic, and a seated woman. 200 meters north lies a sacred bathing place decorated with naturalistic reliefs. It is located near Ubud between Petanu and Pakerisan Rivers, a few minutes drive from the Elephant Cave. https://thetempletrail.com/yeh-pulu/

Spas

We love this spa because it is so tasteful and small and the treatments are luxurious and professional. They do all sorts of beautiful massages and facials, but not beauty treatments. You can make a reservation through fb messenger. They are super quick to respond. https://www.koashala.com/yoga
