The 3 monks who live here are in the business of candle making to support their small monastery. Call ahead for worship service times and for a tour, or for the chance to simply purchase candles or religious items from the gift shop. Please note that the church requests "modest attire" for women and you may be asked to cover shoulders and wear a church-provided sarong over your clothing. https://monasteryofstjohn.org/

City/town information

The closest town for food and gas. A tiny spot, but you can get pretty much everything you need at Reed's market for a comfortable stay. Visit Pioneer Pizza (CASH ONLY!) for fresh pizza and burgers to eat there or to do (FYI, it doubles as a saloon; sometimes there is live music on weekends outdoors). There are a couple of thrift stores open Thurs-Sat and an ice cream shop as well.

Food scene

Visit this fun winery that produces their own grapes and wine in our volcanic soil. They also have a maker's market with cool local pottery, jewelry, tiles and more. Open weekends 12pm - 5pm.

A beautiful restaurant about 5 minutes south of the south entrance to Mt. Lassen. If you're up for the 50-minute drive or plan to visit Lassen anyway, definitely have a meal here. Family friendly, suitable for all diets (call ahead to confirm vegetarian/vegan/gluten-free options) and reasonably priced with a kids' menu too. Reservations accepted on Open Table. Full bar and space for kids to run around outside on the grass.

Fishing and Trails

On-property activities for you to enjoy.
Our private mile of frontage on Battle Creek - small native trout swim freely. Open to fishing for our guests only, and ideally experienced fishers who have the strength to wade, bushwack, and climb. Basecamp Lassen's private fishing pond located at the owners' lodge. Stocked with sizable and hungry Mt. Lassen trout - good fighters but easy enough for young anglers to catch on flies or worms. Best times to catch fish are mornings before 10am and evenings one hour before sunset.

Những gì cần đóng gói

Packing for ranch life

Ensure that you have close-toed shoes; the land is rocky. Bring long pants/long sleeves if you are prone to bug bites like we are (and definitely bug spray!). It can be very warm in the summer, so pack accordingly, especially if you plan to spend time at Mt. Lassen, which is much cooler due to its higher elevation.
Đi cùng trẻ nhỏ

The ranch with little ones

We can offer a pack n play and high chair for your use. Small children should be watched at all times as the land is vast and natural hazards like fast moving bodies of water are on the property. There is a school playground about 1/2 mile up the road; we recommend driving.
Phong tục và văn hóa

Stay on your hosts' land / public land

Our ranch is self-contained and you won't need to leave to get in a great hike or run. But if you do want to explore anywhere in the general area, make sure you're hiking on public land or land that permits public use (e.g. PG&E land). Most land owners close their gates, but not all do. Locals expect a degree of privacy and may approach you if you are on their land. Expect to see lots of "no trespassing" signs at individual ranches; these are your best indicator of private land that you should avoid. We are happy to help you navigate if you want to safely explore!
