Harlech Beach has a four-mile stretch of pristine golden sand, with stunning views of Mount Snowdon. The Morfa Harlech National Nature Reserve at the north end of the beach is Wales’s is home to leatherback turtles that migrate from warmer climes to feed off jellyfish in the waters off this part of the coast. Swimming in the clear waters here is generally safe although there is no lifeguard presence and at times jellyfish can be found off this part of the coastline. The beach is popular with families and dog walkers (note seasonal restrictions are in place) but sadly it isn’t easily accessible for the elderly or disabled.

Black Rock Sands is a wide, open, beach. So wide you can drive onto the beach here – so it’s a popular spot not just for picnickers and sandcastle builders, but also for motor boats and water bikes which have a special zone designated for their use. The name comes from the area to the west of the beach dominated by a large, multi-coloured headland rock, low-tide caves and rock pools, an area rich in marine life. Natural history is also a feature of the local sand dunes, which have been declared a ‘Site of Special Scientific Interest’. Be aware of the following dangers on Black Rock Sands beach - Look for the red signs which contain specific information for that part of the beach, including when and where dogs are allowed.

Criccieth is a beautiful Victorian seaside town on Cardigan Bay, on the Southern side of the Llyn Peninsula. Known as the ‘Pearl of Wales on the Shores of Snowdonia’. Overlooking the town on its headland stands the remains of the 13th century Criccieth Castle. The origin of the name ‘Criccieth’ has been disputed over the years, but many believe it is a reference to welsh words ‘crug caeth’. These words translate to ‘hill captives’ - the hill on which the castle was built upon was once used as a jail.

Hiking & climbing

Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa in Welsh) is the highest mountain in Wales and England. It's one of our most famous and regonizable landmarks and is well worth a visit. Standing tall over the village of Llanberis, Snowdon is a part of a close-knit family of jagged peaks and can offer views of Snowdonia, Anglesey, Pembrokeshire and Ireland. Choose from six different paths to conquer this 1,085 metre (3,560 feet) giant which are the Llanberis path, Pyg Track, Miners’ Track, Watkin Path, Rhyd-Ddu Path or the Snowdon Ranger Path.

Cadair Idris, known as Pen Y Gadair, is truly wonderful to climb. With breath-taking views of the Welsh landscape and coastline stretching as far as the eye can see. There are four main routes to the summit with varying degrees of difficulty making it suitable for all from novice hikers to avid climbers. With some amazing views and sights, Pen Y Gadair is one of the most picturesque summits in all of Snowdonia National Park. My favourite over Snowdon.

This circular walk follows a private walk over a particularly beautiful part of the Nannau estate, which dates back to the twelfth century. The public have been invited to use this walk by the estate since 1890 on the understanding that they observe the country code, follow the route indicated and use the proper access. Please keep dogs on a lead. The Precipice Walk is one of the famous attractions of Dolgellau. It passes through an interesting variety of habitats which include deciduous woodland, a conifer plantation, meadows, lakeside and sheep-walk. But the main attraction of the walk is the incomparable views down the Mawddach Estuary and of the principal mountain ranges of Snowdonia.

Rhinog Fawr forms part of the Rhinogydd range. It is the third highest summit of the Rhinogydd. It can be quite a challenging walk because the hard sedimentary rock is covered with heather, so allow for extra time as this does make footing a bit more tricky. Take in the breathtaking views and the tranquil waters.

The Rhaeadr Ddu Waterfall walk at Ganllwyd near Dolgellau is a short but stunning circular family walk of about 2 miles. It’s like stepping into a beautiful green film set! Start from the little car park on the A470 road on the way into Dolgellau. Cross the road and follow the Afon (river) Gamlan until you reach the impressive double drop waterfall.

Harlech Castle crowns a sheer rocky crag overlooking the dunes and the sea below. Whilst the rugged peaks of Snowdonia rise as a backdrop. Against fierce competition from Conwy, Caernarfon and Beaumaris, this is probably the most spectacular setting for any of Edward I’s castles in North Wales. All four are designated as a World Heritage Site.
