Neighborhoods

Southeast Boise presents an interesting combination of older and newer communities. It stretches from Boise State University to Micron Technology, which means that it includes all of the space between the Boise River and Federal Way. The older part of this area is located just south of Boise State University and can be described as a mixture between the Boise Bench and the North End. The remainder of Southeast Boise has just been developed in the last three decades and contains many suburban style homes. This area is across the river from the site of the Idaho Shakespeare Festival, as well as Table Rock and the Idaho Botanical Gardens. From Southeast Boise, you can easily travel to anywhere in the city of Boise, as it is located at the intersections of Idaho 21, Interstate 84, and Federal Way (a former U.S. highway). As such, you not only have easy access to all of the amenities that this area has to offer, but you can very easily get anywhere else in this large city as well. Overall, the area is friendly and down-to-earth, and it has more of an affluent feel than other parts of Boise or Idaho in general.

When you think of iconic places in Boise, the North End almost always makes it to the top of the list. Nestled just north of the downtown area, the North End serves as the gateway to the foothills. Today, homebuyers can find plenty of desirable homes for sale in Boise’s North End. The heart of the North End is Harrison Boulevard. Built in the early part of the 20th century, Harrison Boulevard was home to many prominent citizens and named after President Benjamin Harrison who signed the Admissions Act, making Idaho a state in 1890. One of the most unique features of the North End is the collection of different architectural styles for both residences and the business district. Harrison Boulevard in particular is home to some of the most beautiful homes in the valley. Although the area has undergone several periods of growth and decline, it is undeniably a place of historical and natural beauty. Named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, fully matured trees and gardens populate the neighborhoods. For bikers and hikers there is an almost endless supply of trails weaving their way throughout the foothills. Families can find fun in the many public parks such as Camel’s Back Park or Elm Grove Park. For food, drinks, and social activities, Hyde Park boasts many restaurants, coffee shops, and more. The recent development of Esther Simplot Park along the Boise River is a very popular attraction which features a whitewater park, paddle boarding, fishing, hiking, and a summer event series. Overall, the area and its residents are a bit more casual in their approach to life and love good food, good company, and the beautiful Idaho outdoors. With an emphasis on livability and sustainability, North End residents are intensely loyal to the area and the way of life.

The Boise Bench is located in close proximity to Downtown Boise; generally oriented by Southwest of the thriving downtown corridor. The Boise Bench, or “Bench” for short, is typically bounded by Federal Way to the East, Cole Road to the West, Garden City to the North, and Interstate 84 to the South. The Bench was named as a result of the geographic rise as you travel away from the current shoreline to the Boise, River. Many portions of the Bench are reminiscent of Boise's North End but without the price tag. As a consequence of its mature trees, iconic architecture, generally high walkability, and lower price points, many locals have begun referring to The Bench as “The Next North End”. One thing is certain, The Bench is currently undergoing revitalization and infill. It is certainly a community on the rise in Boise, Idaho. Today, it can be difficult to envision the very early days of Boise. At first, the Bench was a desert with few inhabitants. It was not until the Ridenbaugh Canal was constructed in the late 1800s that the area began to thrive with orchards, farms, dairies, and homesteads. Fast forward to the Bench today and you will find a pleasant mixture of residential housing, light commercial real estate, parks and recreation, local restaurants, tree-lined streets, bustling retail, and much more. The Bench finds specific strength (and current revitalization) in its proximity to Downtown Boise, Boise State University, and the Boise Airport.

Surrounded on nearly every side, Garden City is almost entirely encompassed by Boise City, yet it remains its own independent municipality. Originally part of the Oregon Trail, Garden City was a crossway for many people traveling west. One such group was a handful of Chinese immigrants coming to the west to search for gold. Upon coming to Garden City, however, they chose to take up farming instead. The Chinese immigrants farmed various produce including strawberries and onions, and eventually switched to hogs. The gardens that the Chinese created give Garden City the name it is known by today. In fact, the only main street through Garden City is named Chinden Boulevard. Chinden came about by combining the word China (or “Chin”) with the word garden (or “den”). On May 22, 1949, Garden City was officially named a separate municipality from Boise City. The leading cause for this was the new passing of legislation in Boise City that banned gambling. In Garden City, now a separate municipality, some types of gambling are still legal, particularly horse racing. Those who own Garden City, Idaho real estate savor this rich history and unique access to some of the state’s best outdoor and indoor activities. Garden City today is a bustling town with an eccentric flair, and is home to many artisans and craftsmen. The Zion Warne Glassblowing Studio will give you a firsthand glimpse at the beautiful art available, and you can even try your own hand at blowing glass with one of their instructional classes. There are also several wineries and breweries throughout Garden City, making the area a lively place for an enjoyable night out. For outdoor adventurous types, be sure to take advantage of the Greenbelt, which runs through several municipalities near Boise. The Greenbelt offers ample opportunity for biking, running, and walking with its extensive trail routes. The trail winds next to the scenic Boise River and is dotted with picturesque trees and landscape throughout. The trail boasts over 45 miles of hikable pathways for everyone to enjoy. The trail is also a popular route for students and faculty attending the university, as it passes right by the university campus.

The city of Boise is strategically located along the stratum where the Rocky Mountains meet the desert, presenting residents and visitors with countless recreational activities. If you are an outdoorsy person, then you are certainly going to love biking or hiking on the foothills of Boise with over 180 miles of trail to choose from. Additionally, there are over 30 miles of the rich and beautiful greenbelt stretching from the East End all the way to Garden City as it follows the meanders of the Boise River. Families can also look forward to having the time of their life with numerous recreational parks that are a stone’s throw away from the city — and that’s not even to mention the good schools available. As you edge towards West Boise outside the hustle and bustle of the downtown, you immediately get into the zone of affordable housing where you get the best of the nearby Garden City and Meridian City. Though downtown Boise is renowned for its amazing collection of eateries and restaurants, you’ll get a real classic treat on the West end. If you are looking for a mature neighborhood that offers the perfect residential environment for your neighborhood, then West Boise is your best bet.

As Idaho's second-largest city behind Boise, Meridian was founded in 1891 and named for its location on the Boise Meridian. Today it shares borders with Nampa to the north and Boise to the east giving residents access to not only its own parks, recreation, and arts opportunities but those of its neighboring cities. With Meridian Speedway, an outdoor racing venue, Roaring Springs water park and the Lakeview Golf Club, there are always places to enjoy the warm summer months. Star is one of those cities that has a lot of local charm and unique history which makes it a great place to visit and live. It is located just west of Boise and is technically part of the Boise and Nampa metropolitan area. It offers you unique access to big city fun and rural exploration. Star is also home to a surprisingly rich wine culture with several wine tours and tastings available in shops like Helina Marie's Wine Shop and Winery Seekers. The town also offers visitors access to some rather extreme fun, such as Adrenaline & Extreme Tours skydiving and ZDROP skydiving tours. So, how did Star get its unique name? During the 19th century, the area was most easily identifiable by a large star located on its school house. This star was used as a guide by people moving in and around Boise, who referred to the small town as “Star.” Despite attempts to create an alternative name, it stuck. The lighthearted residents have embraced the moniker and consider it an important part of their cultural identity. Being so close to Boise (as well as Eagle and Middleton), Star is a primarily rural area with suburban-type neighborhoods that feature a variety of modern and classic-style homes that are still priced very affordably. Expect multiple-story homes in Star as well as those that integrate more modern architectural concepts. That said, some homes integrate a more gothic-era design for those who enjoy a different kind of design concept.

One word comes to mind when you think of Middleton, Idaho: Community. Middleton has a unique community vibe that is perfectly complemented by a local grocery, pharmacy, hardware store, service stations, restaurants, and many other services. The residents of Middleton enjoy several community events which are planned and staged throughout the year. The Harvest Festival, The Fourth of July Celebration and Fireworks Show, Battleball and Dodgeball Tournaments, and the annual Christmas Tree Lighting are all local favorites. The Middleton School District is sought-after by local families as a result of their focus on high academic standards, technology, progress, and teaching standards. Middleton is located just East of Interstate 84, North of Caldwell, and West of Star, Idaho. Non-residents of Canyon County may find it strange that it bears the name, "Middleton". The town was named Middleton for its location between the old fort Boise and Keeney's Ferry; the midpoint between the two. In many ways, it is still "Middleton" in that the town is geographically located in the middle of Star, Nampa, Caldwell, and New Plymouth.
