Seaside Town

The beautiful seaside town of Porthcawl is approx 9 mins away from the flat in a car. There is a bus stop on the main road outside of the flat that will take you to Porthcawl if you don't want to drive. You can catch the number 63 into Porthcawl, and the same bus number will bring you back to Kenfig Hill and drop you at the bus stop 60 seconds from the flat. They run approx every 20 mins. The town centre is full of amazing eateries, I highly recommend the fish and chip shops: The Boathouse on the promenade. Also Finnegan's and Beales - Both award winning. There is an amazing pub called the seafront that does pub grub, The cosy corner offers a variety of cuisine and seasonal foods. And also an indian called Jaipur which is delicious. Don't forget to stop for a Fablas ice cream or a coffee and cake at sidolis along the beach front. There are some lovely shops in the town centre to explore. And you can also pop down to Coney Beach from here to ride on the fun fair! Porthcawl has recently added the cutest little road train which takes visitors from the Promenade to Coney Beach fun fair and it's worth the couple of £ just to take a trip on it and see the sites. The Pavilion in Porthcawl offers a variety of events - it's worth checking out their website for their line up. And the Hi Tide on Coney beach and many of the local pubs offer evening entertainment and live bands. If you come to Porthcawl at the end of September you will see 100s of Elvis fans flock to the biggest Elvis conventions in the world. MAKE SURE YOU BOOK AHEAD BECAUSE IT GET'S BUSY! With 1000s of people flocking to the seaside to enjoy the festivities.

Shopping

Mcarthur Glen is the place to shop, eat and go to the cinema! There are loads of places to eat here: Wagamama, Nandos, Franky & Bennies, Harvester and so many more in the food court. There are so many shops that are all discounted as this is an outlet shopping centre. I won't list them here but check out their website and you can see - it's full of bargains and beautiful items. The Odeon cinema is also located at Mcarthur Glen, not the cheapest for cinema in our local area (check out the Reel Cinema in my other listings). But it is the bigger of the 2 cinemas and has more showings. Sainsburys, KFC and Harvester are all within walking or driving distance of Mcarthur Glen.

The best shopping experience in South Wales is Cardiff City Centre. TRAVEL: You can drive into Cardiff city centre from Kenfig Hill. It will take approx 36mins by car. There is a local train station in Pyle, you can get a train here directly to Cardiff (check the train timetables for more info). Alternatively you can take the number 63 bus from the main road into Bridgend town and walk to the Bridgend Train station to catch the train into Cardiff City. They run more regularly here than from Pyle train station. WHEN YOU ARRIVE AT CARDIFF:- Whether it's visiting the well known high street shops like Primark, Next, Boots... or exploring the historic arcades and their quirky shops. You Will LOVE Cardiff. Here is the LOWDOWN on some of the best places/ things to do in Cardiff: Cardiff Castle - it is just off the high street and is a wonderful mix of the old nestled among a bustling city. You don't have to go in if you don't want to - it does cost money. But it's worth walking the main walls and taking a look at the animal carvings to the left hand side of the main entrance. They are beautiful. Head into the historic arcades of Cardiff - there are so many quirk shops in these arcades just google: Castle Arcade · Duke Street Arcade · High Street Arcade · Morgan Arcade · Royal Arcade · Wyndham Arcade · Old Arcade. Inside St Davids Arcade is a beautiful Co-op of artists and their work. It's perfect for picking up handmade souvenirs and beautiful artwork. Too many eateries to tell you about: But My favourite one by far is located in the most famous "chippy lane/ alley" on Caroline Street. It's called Greek Village and their Giros are AMAZING! The nightlife in Cardiff is fantastic and there are many clubs and bars to explore. As Cardiff is a University City; there are lots of happy hours you can take advantage of. Cardiff Museum - This is a day out all on it's own. They run MANY events here and there is lots to look at and learn. Planning ahead for your next visit I RECOMMEND CHECKING OUT: - The Cardiff International Arena - packed full of comedy acts, bands and live performances. There is something new every week. Check out their website for further info on the upcoming acts. The Principality Stadium - Better known as the beating heart of Wales during our Rugby season, however the Stadium also hosts hundreds of events every year - recent headline acts have included this likes of Pink, Ed Sheeran and The Spice Girls - check out their website for more info. Cardiff Royal Theatre - ballet, live music and concerts - see their website for further info.

Food scene

Beer garden / Pub /Spectacular Grub! This little haven is a short drive away from the flat and has the most amazing food with super generous portions. Traditional pub grub but on another level! They offer a basic fish and chip menu if you're sitting outside, but if you want the good grub I would head indoors and sit in the restaurant. This pub is a stones throw from the lovely Kenfig Pool Nature Reserve. A home to beautiful wildlife and a beautiful spot to stop and explore.

Places for Kids or Grown Ups who are still BIG KIDS!

Jump Jam is a fantastic place if it's raining and you have some kids that need to burn off some energy (or for adults who want to just have some good old fun!). It's a full trampolining park where you can bounce off almost every surface! They also have:- - a climbing wall - a battle beam where you can use foam jousts to hit each other off a platform (think old school gladiators on ITV) - basket ball hoops - a whack-a-mole style light game - where you battle your friends to hit lights that activate in random sequence... SO MUCH FUN! - laser jam - trampolining with laser tag - FRIDAY they offer a 2 hour disco session so you can work out while you rock out! - a cafe and seating area if you just want to watch the kids. There are family days where you can save some money on entrance fees. BOOKING IS REQUIRED, IT CAN GET BUSY AND THEY LIMIT THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE. Visit their website for more info. And note that you have to arrive 30 mins before the start of your session. GRIP SOCKS ARE RECOMMENDED YOU CAN BUY THEM THERE.

An brilliant place to take the family on a wet day in Wales. This place has it all if you want a brilliant day spent in the water. - wave machine - lazy river - slides - rubber ring slides - a VOLCANO - wakeboarding / surfing simulator - snakes that spit water at you (ok they are plastic pipes) - Jacuzzis - Separate kids pool - quieter pool for relaxing The pool has a gentle slope to it so there are no awkward ladders to get in and out of the main pool. Making it perfect for older and younger generations. The theme is tropical island/ jungle and you will hear animal and jungle sounds with the frequent rumble of the volcano which activates the awesome wave machine! It's all round good family fun and I highly recommend it. PLEASE BOOK AHEAD OF VISITING AS IT GETS BUSY. Parking is available on site but you will need to pay. The LC2 is located directly opposite Swansea city, so you could make a day of exploring and shopping with a visit to the LC2 and dinner in one of the many restaurants opposite. JUST BE SURE TO PAY FOR THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF PARKING.

One of my absolute favourite places to go as a child, as an adult and as a family. The castle ruins are steeped in history and are wonderful to explore. There is a bridge to cross the old moat that's around the castle ruins still to this day. The moat is now empty but you can see the walls and walkways that cross the moat and follow in my family footsteps and enjoy rolling down the banking's of the moat or lazing on the embankments in the sun. Make sure to cross the stepping stones during low tide and explore the walks on the opposite side of the river. Try not to fall in as I have so often done in the years gone by. My family and I often paddle in the water here and when the tide is low you can walk from one side of the river to the other if you want to get a little bit wet. It's fun to sit here and watch the horses from the local riding school run through the water to the opposite side of the river when they are turned out or heading out with riders on their backs. (sometimes people fall off, it's a fun past-time to guess which nervous rider will fall - a little dark but fun). There are no facilities on this site, but there is a pub located at the entrance called the Pelican - They offer food and drinks. Or along the main road there is th Old mill, cobbled kitchen, or my favourite The Village Farm Cafe - located near Ewenny Pottery.

For big kids and Grown up big kids! OK so I'm going to be honest here - I AM SCARED OF HEIGHTS. It's located inside Margam Park which is a 4 mind drive from the apartment. Dogs are welcome on site and even though you will have to pay for parking you can explore the beautiful grounds of Margam before or after Go Ape. YOU WILL HAVE TO BOOK YOUR PLACES ONLINE AND THERE ARE RESTRICTIONS I HAVE HILGHIGHTED BELOW. Please note minimum age of 10 years, minimum height of 1.4M (4FT 7”) and maximum weight of 20.5 stone (130KG). For every two children (aged 10-15) taking part, one participating adult aged 18+ is required. 16 and 17 year olds can supervise themselves but not others.

Beaches

ONE OF SOUTH WALES' SURF HAVENS and it attracts surfers from all over. So if you want to go surfing or body boarding this is the beach for you. Rest Bay has a manned lifeguard station. And is home to the lifeguards training school. It is one of the 4 blue flag beaches in South Wales - clean and beautiful. There is a handy hire shop located on the ground so you can hire wet suits, paddle boards, surf boards etc. They also offer surf and paddle board lessons here. There are food and drink amenities on site including a costa coffee for those who need a quick bite or a caffeine fix - but nothing beats a good beach picnic so pack your cooler and head here for the day! There is a beautiful coastal path along Rest Bay that will take you to Pink bay and Sker beach. The majority of the path is decked and therefore accessible to prams and wheelchairs. Dogs are welcome on the costal path all year round. Please note: Dogs are not permitted on the beach during certain seasons, and YOU WILL NEED TO PAY FOR PARKING. Located in Porthcawl approx 10 mins away from the flat by car. (or catch the number 63 bus to porthcawl and walk to the beach - approx 15 mins walk from the town)

Porthcawl sea front is one of the nicest places to spend a day or evening strolling, exploring and watching the sun set. There is a long promenade to walk which is lit by night so you can enjoy an evening stroll as well as during the day. This is one of my favourite places to take my dogs for a long walk during summer evenings. Some of the pubs along the front are dog friendly so you can sit on the patio and have food or a drink. I usually park near the lighthouse/ harbour and walk the full length of the prom from the lighthouse to the entrance to rest bay - this is part of the coastal path and is paved so it's pram, wheelchair and scooter friendly. The prom has a couple of levels you can choose to explore. The top level takes you close to the shops and bars along the seafront, the middle level takes you along a lovely walkway over looking the sea and the lower level gives you access to the beach. This beach is gravelled and has lots of lovely rockpools to explore. There are some lovely eateries along the front, some of my favourites include: The Boathouse; I highly recommend grabbing some chips from The Boathouse fish and chip bar and eating them on the beach (or you can dine in). Fablas - locally sourced Welsh ice cream The waterfront pub - for good pub grub food and a lovely lemonade sitting out on the front patio watching the sun go down. Sidolis - if you fancy a cake and a cuppa head to one of the little sidoli cafes along the prom. You can walk from Porthcawl front to Rest Bay beach or to Coney Beach (where the fair is located). There has been a BRAND NEW road train added to the front and it's lovely to be able to enjoy the ride and see the sights. It travels the full length of Porthcawl front from Coney beach to The entrance of Rest Bay. It does cost to travel on it but the ticket lasts the day and it's brilliant if you have children that don't want to walk any further, you can just hop on and off it. Porthcawl town is located just off the sea front prom so you can spend the day looking around the shops and taking in the views too. The pavillion is also located on the sea front and there are some wonderful events/ productions hosted here. Check out their website for a full line up. My favourites include - tea dances and The Elvis Festival!

This is one of my all time favourite beaches to explore! It is a pebble and sand beach with large rock formations and small caves to explore. There is a costal path you can walk at the furthest end of the beach that takes you to a few different coves where you can sit and watch the sun set or enjoy a picnic. Many swimmers and surfers love to hit the waves along the river mouth. And at low tide you can walk through the river across to Newton Beach on the opposite shore - BUT BE CAREFUL AS THE TIDE CHANGES QUICKLY! My daughter and I have spent many seasons on this beach, it isn't as popular as Porthcawl as there are no shops located near the beach and it's not as accessible for wheelchairs and prams which means it's less popular during the high summer days. But it's far more diverse and the area is beautiful. The car park is small and is a paid car park so if you're planning on spending a sunny day here; get there early! There is always an ice cream van parked up and he now accepts card payments so make sure you stop by and grab a whippy ice cream! There are on site toilet facilities here and there is also a manned lifeguard station (during high season). On the way to Ogmore by sea beach there are LOTS of lovely places to eat: Cobbles - is amazing fine dining (book in advance) The pelican - located opposite Ogmore Castle Ruins; it has just reopened it's doors and is now a lovely restaurant and bar. The old mill - serves lovely pub grub! One of my ALL TIME FAVES is The Village Farm Cafe - located by Ewenny pottery (search engine it). It looks like nothing from the outside but if you want a good home cooked meal / drool-worthy Sunday lunch and the best deserts you HAVE EVER HAD - go here!! It's super popular with locals so sometimes it's worth booking a table (especially on Sunday).

Another stunning beach located near Porthcawl is Newton Beach. One of my favourites for a dip in the ocean (but wear swim shoes cos of the rocks). A mixed pebble and sand beach depending on how far out the tide is. This beach is a good one for walking as it stretches for miles. Take a back pack and walk from Newton all the way down to the river mouth where you can see Ogmore by sea beach on the opposite shore. During low tide you can actually cross over to Ogmore - By - Sea but be weary of the tidal changes as they happen quickly. At the far end of the beach are the sand dunes - you can follow these all the way to Southern down sand dunes where "Lawrence of Arabia" was filmed back in the day! Lots of exploring, bathing and picnicking can be done on this beautiful Blue Flag beach. There is a car park, but you have to pay. I am not aware of any rules prohibiting dogs on this beach but this may change.

If you want a beautiful sandy beach for a day out - Aberavon is the best!. approx 19mins by car. I love this beach for wave bobbing, sand castle building, shall collecting and a nice day out with the family. Aberavon beach front has a fully paved promenade that stretches for miles and is a great place for walking, skating and scooting. It's flat so you can use a mobility scooter, wheelchair or pram along the front. Located near the beach is a lovely Lido that's ideal for the kids on a hot day. It has sprinklers, bathing pools, a huge bucket that fills and douses everyone with water. There are restaurants and eateries along the front: - Remos - Classic Foods - The Front - Burgers and lovely dinner - Francos - Chip shop - Cinnamon Kitchen - Indian PAID PARKING DOTTED ALONG THE COAST; dogs welcome at certain times of the year.

The beautiful cliffs of Southerndown / Dunraven Bay are a sight to behold! But the reason I love this beautiful place is for it's beach, night-time view of the Milky way and it's secret garden! Not the most well known of beaches in our costal region but one that is well worth a visit. It's approx 24 mins by car from the apartment. You will have to travel down the steep hill in the car to the bottom car park. Here is the best place to park if you are going to explore. Once you're in the bottom car park you will see a gate house and some gates that lead to the secret garden. The path looks as if it leads no where but you will find a door in a wall - and this is the entrance to the gardens. You can hike up to the top of the cliffs and see the views over to Porthcawl and beyond. I have enjoyed many a sunset here - but make sure you take a torch if going in the evening and be very careful as it can be dangerous near the cliff edge. During warm summer months we have seen the beautiful phenomenon of Bioluminescent plankton on this beach for a few years. Their beautiful blue light shines on the waves as they crest and it's truly spectacular to see. To make it even more magical; there is very little light pollution in this area so you can see the milky way in the sky at certain times of the night. There are dedicated social media pages to the night sky and bio plankton in South Wales - have a look and see what's happening during your stay!

Sightseeing
