Food scene

Trumpter (now Poirier’s) is a great place for an upscale dinner. Everything we’ve had there is delicious, but we have a real soft spot for the fish and chips. It doesn’t hurt to call ahead for reservations.

Super yummy Mexican food. We all know the greasy Mexican food that leaves us with regrets a day later… this is NOT that! Fresh and delicious food in a fun atmosphere. This place is usually bustling, and you’ll know why once you taste the food.

Tasty brunch/lunch spot with a country store you can browse if you want. It’s a fun atmosphere, and we have friends who come to town just to eat here.

This is a fun little gluten free & vegan cafe in downtown Mount Vernon. (For the pure vegans - Shambala does serve limited wild-caught fish and grass-fed beef options, as well as a few dairy options, but most menu items are 100% vegan.)

Hiking/Outdoors

Little Mountain Park is crisscrossed with trails, so you can really “choose your own adventure.” We recommend looking up the trail map so you can plan your route to the top. Of course, you could stay down in the cool, lush woods - but the valley overlook view at the top is lovely! The common routes are about 2-3 miles to the top.

Baker Lake Trail is about an hour from us, but on a clear day, it’s an amazing place to go. The full trail is 13.9 miles each way, but you can turn around at any time. Starting at the south trailhead, you’ll reach the log-and-cable bridge at about 1.25 miles. You can see the mountain somewhat here, but don’t miss the best view just down the trail. Cross bridge and continue less than 0.25 miles further to the sign for Anderson Point. Take a left there and go through the campsites to climb down to the water’s edge at the tip of the point. The view of Mount Baker is stunning!

Great hike! You will need a Washington State Discover Pass for entry, but you can easily obtain a day pass online. More information is available on the Washington Trails Association (WTA) hiking guide including route descriptions and parking. This hike does have significant uphill sections.

Kukutali Preserve offers a flat, roughly 2 mile hike with minimal elevation change and beautiful views of Puget Sound and Deception Pass. Fun fact: this preserve was the first land allotment of its kind to be co-owned and co-managed by the US and a tribal government. Discover Pass required.

Great place to create your own adventure! Drive by, stop to walk across the bridge, or stay longer to explore one of the many hikes in this iconic state park.
