Towards Angel - Upper Street. Islington boasts two markets, a regular London street market [Chapel Street] and the famous Camden Passage for antiques and collectables. All the major high-street stores are represented, together with many small independents that you will not find elsewhere. Islington is known for interiors stores, including many retro, vintage and architectural salvage places. There are many popular restaurants and bars within a short stroll and to suit all pockets. From the original Ottolenghi to the Afghan Kitchen, Asahi and 1250, from Planet Organic to Five Guys; from a cocktail at 69 Colebrooke Row to the Fish and Chip Shop on Upper St, Thai, tapas (Meson Callejon or La Farolla), traditional english pub or french bistro. You will find all the major chains and long-established locals. Best for brunch? the Proud Archivist, Crepe Affaire, Euphorium Bakery or the Breakfast Club. Looking for Pubs with a garden: The Albion Sunday lunch? the Duke of Cambridge or the Pig and Butcher, The Albion (lengthy service) or Meson Callejon very busy with local spaniards Looking for Organic food? Planet Organic, 64 Essex Road Other good local places include the Screen on the Green Cinema, Sadlers Wells Theatre, the Estorick collection, the Crafts Council, secret river walk [ask me], the Union Chapel [wonderful music venue], Almeida Theatre, Kings Head Theatre Pub, the Little Angel Puppet Theatre, the Business Design Centre (many exhibitions and professional shows all year), Candid Arts Trust, Moving Arts, Highbury Fields, Comedy Clubs [again, ask me] .. all of these are within 10-15 minutes walk, if not closer. If you want to relax, there is also a place called Floatworks (capsule water tanks where you can 'escape and relax' for 45mins to an hour) on Essex road just close to the green.

Sightseeing

The Regent's canal is super long and link on this part Islington to St John's Wood area going via Camden, Camden market, Regents Park and Primrose Hill and into St John's. Going eastwards, it is necessary to leave the canal going underground a long tunnel only accessible by boat that comes out on the other side of Angel. This part of the canal links Islington to Canary Wharf and the Thames on one side passing by Victoria park. If turning left after Victoria park, the canal takes us north to the Hackney marshes (very trendy nowadays with many warehouses transformed into flat, lots of mini breweries and foodies and coffee places, live music, etc) and the Lee Valley which is adjacent to the Stratford Olympic park. It runs parallel to the River Lea until it joins it. The River Lea originates in Leagrave, Luton, Bedfordshire, in the Chiltern Hills, and flows southeast through Hertfordshire, along the Essex border and into Greater London, to meet the River Thames at Bow Creek. It is one of the largest rivers in London and the easternmost major tributary of the Thames, 68km or 42 miles. The river's significance as a major east–west barrier and boundary has tended to obscure its importance as north–south trade route. Below Hertford the river has since medieval times had alterations made to make it more navigable for boats between the Thames and eastern Hertfordshire and Essex, known as the Lee Navigation. This stimulated much industry along its banks. The navigable River Stort, the main tributary, joins it at Hoddesdon. While the lower Lea remains somewhat polluted, its upper stretch and tributaries, classified as chalk streams, are a major source of drinking water for London. An artificial waterway known as the New River, opened in 1613, abstracts clean water away from the upper stretch of the river near Hertford for drinking, and lower parts of the river are also abstracted from. The Lea's origin in the Chilterns contributes to the extreme hardness (high mineral content) of London tap water. The Regent's Canal on the West side also goes underground close to Maida Vale leading then into Little Venice and the Grand Union Canal at the back of Paddington Station. There again, everything has been redeveloped with many new building flats, restaurants and coffee shops. The Grand Union Canal goes to the West side of London up to Birmingham!!! It is the principle navigable waterway between London and the Midlands. Its main line starts in London and ends in Birmingham, stretching for 137 miles (220 km) with 166 locks. So if you want to walk or cycle them, be aware that you could be on for a while ;) It's a great way to see parts of London that are unusual. Anymore questions, let me know!
