The Upper Largo Hotel is a nice wee walk up the hill....(it’s nicest to go along the beach to the other 'Temple' end of the village and up through the wooded walk rather than along the main road)....it's super casual so don't go for the decor but the locals love the food and it’s very reasonable.

If you find yourself in the area on the second weekend of each month (except January and February), it’s definitely worth a visit to the market weekend held at the Bowhouse Farmers Market near St Monans. The market, held indoors and outdoors, includes street food, as well as cooking demonstrations, craft workshops and tastings from local distilleries. Even not on market weekends, there's an interesting cafe and food shops (check open days)

The East Pier Smokehouse in St Monans (a seafood lover's dream but the smoked halloumi salad is sometimes available for vegetarians) is so popular that they only take bookings 7 days in advance. You can eat indoors upstairs, outdoors or they offer a takeaway service.

A bit pricey and more in the fine-dining category but the smaller portions are lovingly created. It is situated right on the waterfront and has a terrace with beautiful views looking over to North Berwick.

While you will probably mostly walk along the stunning beaches heading towards Elie, it is definitely worth the mile or so’s walk along the beach in the other direction towards Levenmouth and cut up to Silverburn Park where you will find a charming and tranquil walled garden with the Cottage Window Café for home-baking and toasties to enjoy in the garden (takeaway only).

The Old Barn at the Dumbarnie Golf Links Clubhouse, near Elie, is a joy on a sunny day, even if you're not a golf enthusiast. It is very busy with golfing groups but they do accept 'walk ins'/non-golfers for (a very hearty) breakfast if they can - but please phone first to see if you can be accommodated. If you're lucky, you will get a seat outdoors, with stunning views over the golfing green to the sea.

There is no better setting on a sunny day for tea and cake or a simple lunch than this tearoom. This characterful old tearoom has uneven flagstone floors inside and, to the back, a perfect little garden looking out to sea. Delicious treats and local crafts for sale.

Be warned - you will go into this artisan Pittenweem Chocolate shop and café to supposedly buy chocolate gifts for loved ones and they will never make their way home with you...these hand-made chocolates are too delicious to resist. There's also a café with all sorts of chocolate goodies (including a stew made with cocoa) if you want to just simply indulge. You're on holiday after all!

The small Dory Bistro is a very well respected local eatery on the shore front in Pittenweem which has a menu which changes weekly as well as daily specials - using freshly caught seafood and vegetables from its own kitchen garden. It is a fish lovers delight but also caters for vegetarian, vegan and gluten free diners. Beautifully presented and delicious food served in a gallery selling local art with sea views.

The Cambo Estate is worth a visit for the gardens (including a lovely walk down to the beach) but, for some, the café is the big attraction. The Isle of May is a natural nature reserve and a bird-watcher's delight. There are several ferry operators in nearby Anstruther who offer the 45 minute journey over to the Island where you can spot puffins, guillemots, razorbills, shags, terns and cormorants as well as visit historically important buildings including a chapel and lighthouse. Some operators offer trips which circumnavigate the island while others can drop you off to collect you later if you really want to immerse yourself in the birdlife. Check for dates of your trip as they do not operate all year round and also may be restricted as a result of the current bird flu. Tours are often fully booked in summer months so book well in advance. Osprey of Anstruther is one of the operators who offer a variety of trips: https://isleofmayboattrips.co.uk/

If you don't mind a bit of height and a little bit of upper body strength, you will love the Elie Chain Walk. Park up at Shell Bay and, just a little further along, you will find a series of 8 chains attached to the cliffs for an exhilarating walk (free to use). Just make sure you check the tide is well out so you don't get trapped in the caves. You can walk up and over the cliffs on the way back to do a loop.

Kellie Castle and garden offers a tranquil day out near Pittenweem. The Castle dates back to the 14th century and the Arts & Crafts garden has magnificent herbaceous borders. Breathe in the heavy scent of old roses and be transported back in time before visiting the teashop and a sculpture studio. Even non-gardeners cannot fail to be impressed with the immaculate and colourful displays with romantic archways and secret benches. Tours of the Castle are by guided tours only but are well worth it to hear the fascinating history of the talented and artistic former owners.

Scotland's Secret Bunker is fascinating at any time but it's also a great sightseeing option on a wet day. An unassuming farmhouse conceals the entrance to an Underground Nuclear Command Centre built in 1953 and used during the Cold War. You can see dormitories, broadcasting studio, CND room and details of how the elite survived the Cold War in this top secret location.

The Fife Coastal Path is the major attraction in the East Neuk with its miles and miles of sandy beaches, rocky outcrops, seals and bird-watching opportunities, historically important buildings and towers, quaint villages and even a windmill. Pick a section and take a picnic or plan a lunch en-route for a great day out. My ideal (easy) day out is to walk from Elie to St Monans, pick a nice lunch spot, and wander back. Or head straight out from the door of the Wee Blue House and walk to Elie, taking in the Chain Walk if you're feeling adventurous.

While the temptation might be to always head to the beach, the quaint historic village of Falkland - reached by heading inland a little - is definitely worth the 14 mile drive. The village has lovely little independent shops and some great cafes and restaurants. But it is best known for its Palace and Garden - a favourite of Mary, Queen of Scots and also more recently used as a film location for the TV series Outlander.

The central part of Fife is dominated by the shapely Lomond Hills. Benarty Hill and Bishop Hill both overlook the peaceful waters of Loch Leven, whilst adjacent to them is West Lomond - the highest in this part of Scotland, a hill of real character and a stunning viewpoint. Its neighbour East Lomond is perhaps the most loved of the range, rising with a steep dome-like summit to the south of the picturesque and historic village of Falkland. Check the guidebook or online to decide how big a day's walking you fancy - perhaps even doing the horseshoe walk of around 19kms. With some fresh air in your lungs, a drink or meal in one of the many restaurants in the village of Falkland or the organic vegetarian cafe and farm shop very nearby called the Pillars of Hercules will be well deserved. Or take a short detour to Leven Larder - a lovely cafe with a great shop on the shore of Loch Leven, not too far away depending on where you've parked.

If you are a green fingered type, you might enjoy a trip to Cambo Gardens near St Andrews. Cambo has walled gardens with colourful floral displays dating back to the 1800s, but in the Spring, its snowdrop collection (with over 350 varieties) which carpets the woodlands all the way down to the sea is a real draw. It also has a cafe serving very creative vegetarian and vegan food (cheese scones are second to none!).

The historic seaside town of St Andrews is just 12 miles away and is particularly famous for its University (where Will and Kate met!) and of course its famous Old Course golf. Hop on the bus or get on those walking boots!

It’s very easy to explore the East Neuk by following the coastline. If you are exploring by bus, you will find the bus stop just a few metres away under the viaduct. The routes and timetables can be found at www.stagecoachbus.com. When getting on the bus, you can pay by cash or contactless card. But of course, we're right on the Fife Coastal Path so get on those walking boots or trainers -Earlsferry, Elie, St Monans, Pittenweem and Anstruther are all within walking distance if you are feeling energetic. You can always jump on the bus back to Lower Largo after you've enjoyed a hearty lunch.
