Neighbourhoods

Some of Newcastle's best places to eat are hidden away in Sandyford. On Starbeck Avenue there's Aidan's Kitchen for coffee and brunch, Little Lobo for Mexican (try the frozen margaritas), and Scream for Pizza, with some of the best pizzas you'll find outside Italy, featured in the Times' list of the top 25 pizzas in the UK and a finalist in a recent British Street Food competition. On a summer evening there are tables outside all down the street and a great atmosphere. On the next street, Goldspink Avenue, Little Green is a very friendly vegan cafe with delicious lunches and cakes and fabulous smoothies. And don't miss Mascalzone, the Italian-Scottish fusion restaurant opposite, for outstanding food and very good value; it's a small family-run place and very popular with locals, so you might have to book!

The Ouseburn is one of the most vibrant, creative areas in the North East. It's a beautiful place for a wander during the day: you can walk down the green valley under the dramatic railway viaduct to come out at an urban farm, then follow the river to the Quayside. Its full of music and culture, crammed with artists' studios and places to visit. Check out the exhibitions at the Biscuit Factory, and visit Seven Stories (the national centre for children's books), then see what music's on at the Cluny in the evening. There are great cafes, restaurants and pubs too: try the Ship Inn, the Kiln, the Cumberland Arms, Ernest, the Tyne Bar, and the Free Trade.

Food scene

Outstanding Italian food with a Scottish twist and great local seafood, as well as lots of good vegetarian options. Excellent value too. It's a small family-run place and popular with locals, so book ahead to be sure of getting a table.

Scream for Pizza on Starbeck Avenue have featured in the Times' list of "25 best pizzerias" and made it to the finals of the British Street Food awards - their wood fired pizzas are probably the best you'll find outside Naples. Really. That good. You might have to book a table on a Friday or Saturday night, but there's also plenty of seating space outside or you can order takeaway.

The Ship is a friendly pub in the Ouseburn, with a great vegan menu and lots of seating space outside. Just opposite the Cluny, if you're going to a gig later.

Sightseeing

Jesmond Dene is a narrow wooded valley not far from the centre of Newcastle, but it feels like another world - wild, green and tranquil, especially with the rhododendrons in late May and the autumn colours in September and October. A great place for a walk (and only five minutes away from my place!)
