Prehistoric islet with a distinctive triangular shape
A few metres from the western shore of Lake Varese, in the municipality of Biandronno, a small triangle-shaped atoll emerges: the Isolino Virginia, a famous European prehistory site.
Known as Isola di San Biagio in the 16th century, due to the presence of a small church dedicated to the saint, it was renamed in the late 19th century by its last owner, industrialist Andrea Ponti, in honour of his wife Virginia. This portion of dry land has an area of 9200 square metres and is the oldest pile-dwelling settlement in the Alpine Arc, the findings of which are preserved in the small archaeological museum on the island, the "Andrea Ponti" Museum.
Isolino Virginia is a listed archaeological and environmental area and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A site where the combination of history and environment creates a balance of profound beauty. The lake habitat, lily-rich vegetation and varied bird life turn the place into an oasis of tranquillity.
You can reach Isolino Virginia from the main landings on the lake.
