Sightseeing

The majestic Sliabh Liag (Slieve League) cliffs, a 10 minute drive from the house, are a must-see. Great for sightseeing and also hiking. There's a nice coffee and gift shop along the way and two parking areas - the main parking area a half hour walk from the main viewpoint, and a smaller parking area at the main viewpoint, Bunglass Point. The road is narrow in places so take your time when driving. The adventurous can also hike from the house, taking Pilgrim's route. You could also stop on the way back at The Rusty Mackerel for food/drinks (best to book in advance).

Teelin Pier, a 5 minute drive from the house (go right). Once a centre for fishing in the area, with lovely views along the way and back down the estuary. Some people bring kayaks to the Pier. Sliabh Liag boat trips leave from here.

A lovely waterfall, about 30 minutes drive from the house, on the route to Maghera beach. You can stop at the nearby town of Adara for something to eat. Take a left for 'A Machaire' just outside Ardara. To get there, the scenic route via L1125 turn to left at Carrick before the bridge takes in spectacular views of Glengesh Pass.

Take the picturesque coastal road to Kilcar to take in some lovely views over Teelin harbour and coastline, visit the small beach or visit Kilcar. Go through Carrick, and when heading back out of the town, after the bridge turn right and follow the signs for the coastal road to Kilcar. This is a lovely drive/ cycle with great views over Teelin harbour, and the local coastline including Muckross. If you want to visit the small beach along the way (the one you can see from Seaview House), then at the (partially hidden) crossroads along this road, take right and follow the road, keeping left. You might need to ask locally if you can't find it. Also, the beach at Muckross along the way to Kilcar is quite beautiful and a popular spot with surfers. Kilcar itself is a lovely little town with some good pubs. It also hosts an annual traditional Irish musical festival including early May and late July.

A beautiful hidden waterfall, near the Largy Viewpoint, 10 minutes drive from Carrick, on the road back towards Killibegs, not far from the Blue Haven hotel. Important: It can be dangerous getting there - you will need to time the tides, and it involves climbing over often slippery rocks. Best to research and plan in advance. Direction guides: You can find through online search/maps using 'Secret Waterfall, Largy'. There's plenty of guides online for how to access, for example, the theirishroadtrip site. Basic directions: It's along the road the Blue Haven is on, on the opposite side through a gate. Down a dirt path to the beach then right along the beach over the rocks until you reach it.

Muckros, less than 15min drive from the house, along the coastal road from Carrick to Kilcar offers beautiful panoramic views including St. John’s Point, Ben Bulben in Sligo, Croagh Patrick in Mayo and Sliabh Liag, Europes highest sea cliffs. Muckross Head is popular with rock climbers with its unusual crag of sandstone and mudstone. There are also two beaches. That beach or trá na nglór beach (or beach of the noise) has a riptide and is popular with surfers. And trá bán beach (meaning white beach in Irish), some hundreds of metres away is a popular family beach which is safe for swimming. See govisitdonegal for more info.

Take a scenic 25 minute walk from the house to Carrick along Glen river, and its 'Salmon Leap' with a coffee van and lots of picnic benches along the way. Fishing also possible under a permit and catch and release scheme (see sign near the coffee van for details on sourcing a permit). A lovely way to go is along the backroad behind the house - leave the gates and go right along this lane, with views to the left of the mountain and to the right of the estuary. This also cuts down the time spent walking on the main road to just a couple of minutes. When you emerge onto the main road, go over the small stone bridge, and maybe have a coffee and a snack at the Brew and Thru coffee van or simply take in the views of the river. Head on towards Carrick on the main road for a couple of minutes, of course watching out for cars, and when you come to the metal bridge cross over and take the pathway along the Glen river into Carrick. Picnic tables overlooking the river and a lovely walk along the river into Carrick town. Along the Glen river walk near Carrick, you will also find the Carrick Playground for the kids and also outdoor gym equipment for adults. In Carrick, you can stop for drinks/coffee at one of the pubs, or pick up some groceries at one of the local shops.

On the way from Killibegs to Carrick, stop off for beautiful panoramic views across the ocean. On a clear day, you can see four counties – Donegal, Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim. Sunsets from here are best from October to February. You can also frequently spy dolphins playing in the bay below Largy, while from November to February flocks of wild geese fly in from Iceland to winter in the field below.

Beaches

A small gorgeous crescent-shaped beach near Malin Beg about 25 minutes drive from the house. One of the must-visits. A parking area overlooks the beach, with steps down to the beach (quite a lot of steps so coming back up with be your workout for the day!). Along the road to Malin Beg/ Silver Strand, there are two small ancient burial mounds, a wooden mill where you can buy authentic hand knit garments and the Algaran seaweed products visitor centre. You can easily spend a few hours between the beach and the various places to visit. Good for a morning or afternoon trip.

Maghera beach and caves. A large, beautiful beach about 30-40 minutes drive from the house. One of our favourite beaches. Also has some caves that you can investigate when the tide is out. You pass Assaranca Waterfall along the way. Take the scenic route - turn left just before the bridge in Carrick, taking the L1125 road, for some spectacular views of the Glengesh Pass from the valley at Glengesh Viewing Point. Just before Ardara look for the turn left marked 'An Machaire', follow this route to the waterfall and then onto the beach. Make a picnic out of it, weather permitting, or stop at a restaurant or bar in the local town of Ardara for something to eat. Makes for a great day out.
