Many who complete the 19.4 km (12 mile) journey will tell you the climbs can be steep and the weather unpredictable, though worth it in every aspect. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is located in the Tongariro National Park - New Zealand's oldest national park and a dual UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This track circles a beautiful lake surrounded by native forest and is a special favourite of tree lovers, birdwatchers, and families. It's an easy 5km (1 to 2 hours, depending how fast you go) walk.

This walk is walking distance from the cottage - just walk down to the end of Carroll Street (away from the motorway), up Fishers Track and follow the signs. It's about half an hour from the house to the start of this walk, then half an hour up to the lookout, which has views to Mt Taranaki on a clear day. Then around 1 -2 hours up to the waterfall.
This is classified an advanced tramping track (though we think it is more like intermediate)

This walk is walking distance from the cottage - just walk down to the end of Carroll Street (away from the motorway), up Fishers Track and follow the signs. It's about half an hour from the house to the start of this walk, then half an hour up to the lookout, which has views to Mt Taranaki on a clear day. Then around 1 -2 hours up to the waterfall.

7km loop, around 2.5 hours. A very easy walk - well maintained pathway, not much elevation.
