Sightseeing

Catch the ferry at the bottom of Queen St in the CBD and enjoy a 25min ride across the harbour. The trip takes you past the busy Auckland port and container wharf, and the naval base. Devonport is a beautiful little village with a wonderful selection of cafes and restaurants. The energetic may wish to walk up the main street and then walk up to the summit of Mt Victoria for beautiful 360 degrees of Auckland City, the harbour and gulf. You could also walk along King Edward Parade to North Head for more panoramic views. The ferry trip is also well worth doing on a clear evening too.

There are many beaches from Oneroa below the shops and cafes or perhaps Onetangi which has its own local pub. Transport can be a hire car or bus. The trip out and back takes you past Browns Island, Rangitoto Island, Motuihe Island and Motutapu Island all of which are part of our iconic Hauraki Gulf which has been the playground and training ground of so many of our world renowned yachtsmen.

This is the highest point on the Auckland isthmus at 196m or 643ft and gives commanding views over the city. This extinct volcano was created about 28,000 years ago. It is a good walk to the summit but the view is worthy of the effort. (Good walking surface)

Tamaki Drive begins at Judges Bay, by the container terminal and runs along the waterfront to St Heliers Bay. This is almost 8kms of spectacular views across the harbour to Devonport and Rangitoto. Along the route there are ample points of interest, like Kelly Tarltons Sea Life Aquarium, shops and cafes. For those who enjoy to exercise it is a flat paved walk or there are cycles for hire in the summer season.

Parks & Nature

This is Auckland's oldest park and has an area of 75 hectares, one of Aucklands largest parks. Within the grounds is the "Winter Gardens" and well worth a visit to enjoy the special flora and the architecture of years gone by. The Auckland War Museum is a wonderful place to spend several enlightening hours.

Arts & Culture

I make no apology for plagiarizing the follow explanation; - The Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT) is a leading Auckland Museum with a focus on science, transport and technology. You can experience the MOTAT magic over two great sites at MOTAT Great North Road or MOTAT Meola Road. The multi-award winning Aviation Display Hall is located at MOTAT Meola Road. You can start your experience at either, with each site accessible by car, taxi and public transport. Included as part of standard MOTAT admission, the Western Springs Tram service is a fantastic way to experience a historical tram ride between the two sites and passes the idyllic Western Springs Park and Auckland Zoo.
