A must-do experience in Ålesund. The stairs start at the top of Byparken, a five minute walk from the apartment. From there, it is 418 steps to the top of Aksla where you will enjoy a panoramic view of Ålesund and its surrounding islands. There is also a restaurant called Fjellstua.
In Byparken you will also find the statues of Rollo - the founder of Normandie, and Keiser Wilhelm II who helped rebuild the city after it burned down in 1904.

Next to the lighthouse you will find a café combined with an art gallery. There is also a popular beach for surfing a short walk from the lighthouse.
From Godøya you can also do a nice mountain hike to Storhornet where you will find the famous Johan Skytt stone. You can get some amazing pictures standing on this stone - if you dare - with Alnes and its lighthouse in the back ground. The trip is quite demanding and is only recomended for experienced hikers.

If the weather is nice I would really recommend a trip to Sunnmøre Museum.

It's only a 10 minute bus trip away from the apartment.

The outdoors area, consisting of old buildings that have been moved to this idyllic area from nearby villages, is free of charge. If you pay the entrance fee you can also enter the halls with old viking ships and also enter the middleage museum a few minute's walk away.
It's only a 10 minute bus trip away from the apartment.

Today, it is owned and kept open as a museum by the local pentecostal church. There is no entrance fee, but their opening hours are very unpredictable due to it being depended on voluntary workers.

The local fleet of fishermen sell their produce directly from their boats at Skansekaia. They have a FB page called "Kaisalg Ålesund og omegn - Surofi" that you should follow to get information about what, where and when they sell their catch of the day. They normally lay close to the sushi restaurant Zuuma.

The Geirangerfjord is, together with the Nærøyfjord, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site as West Norwegian Fjords. In addition to a charming little town center, it is also the base of some amazing mountain hikes.
If you go there by car, it takes roughly 2 hours from Ålesund. The drive is quite spectacular on its own. You will need to take one short ferry to get there.
You can also take the Fjordcruise from Ålesund, which takes you through 3 fjords in 3 hours. This is quite expensive, but if the weather is good it's worth it!

Transfer from the airport
The easiest way of getting from and to the airport is by the airport shuttle bus operated by Vy. The trip takes approx. 20 minutes.
When getting to Ålesund you can exit the bus at Kiperviktorget. From there the apartment is a 2-3 minute walk away.
On the return to the airport the closest bus stop is Blixvalen.

Alcohol
Buying alcohol is not as straight forward as in other European contries.
In the normal grocery stores you will find beer, cider and mixed drinks with a alcohol percentage of maximum 4,7%.
Even if the stores have wider opening hours, they will only allow you to buy it between 8 am and 8 pm on working days, 8 am to 6 pm on Saturdays and never on Sundays.
For stronger alcohol, such as wine and liqour, you have to go to Vinmonopolet. They are normally open from 10 am to 18 pm on weekdays, and 10 am to 16 pm on Saturdays.
