open every day from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. (500 shillings). Giraffes amble right over to you to snack on peanut pellets from your hand. If getting licked by a foot-long tongue and hit with musky giraffe breath isn’t your idea of fun, there’s also a cafe, a gift shop and a tortoise pen. If you’re really into giraffes, Giraffe Manor is right next door, a colonial-era home that has been turned into a luxury hotel where you can feed the animals from your room.

The Karen neighborhood, a 5-minute drive from Sharon’s Cottage , is named after Karen Blixen, the Danish baroness who as Isak Dinesen wrote “Out of Africa.” She lived in Kenya from 1914 to 1931, and if you want a heavy dose of colonial times, you can visit the Karen Blixen Museum which was her house, and see some of her old things, mixed with props from the movie (800 shillings, open daily 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.). At no charge, you can soak up the million-dollar view of the distant Ngong Hills, which inspired Blixen and countless others to romanticize this part of the world.

If you’re still feeling active, head to the Nairobi Safari Walk inside the headquarters of the Kenya Wildlife Service. Follow the winding stone paths and suspended boardwalk for glimpses of lions, leopards, rhinos, ostriches and zebra. There are cheetahs, too, some quite friendly, and for a few extra shillings, you can pet a very large cat. The safari walk is open every day from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. and costs 710 shillings.

the Talisman, at 320 Ngong Road, just beyond the Karen roundabout. Admire the Talisman’s quintessential Kenyan style — its half-indoor, half-outdoor architecture, with a colorful bar, low couches and lush gardens. The menu is a tasty jumble of curries, stir fries, pastas and meats, with specials every day. Don’t miss the feta and coriander samosas as an appetizer (500 shillings). Lunch, including a drink, runs about 1,400 shillings.

It’s dinner time, and time to dive in to Nairobi’s rich Indian culture. Decades ago the British brought workers from India to help build the East African railroad stretching from Mombasa to Kampala. The result today is a flourishing Indian community with all-Indian malls and countless Indian restaurants. You can’t miss with Anghiti, which has two locations, the livelier at the back of the New Rehema House off Rhapta Road in Westlands. Start with some papadum and a passion fruit lassi, followed by chili paneer as an appetizer. Some of the best dinner bets are chicken madras with methi naan, fish masala and paneer lababdar. Dinner for two, about 1,500 shillings.

Asmara isn’t strictly a bar, its a rather nice Eritrean/ Ethiopian restaurant but it makes the list as its serves the most killer margaritas I have ever tasted. All the cocktails are fabulous, the pizzas are yummy and there is a great little playground outside for the kids. I doubt very much you are going to be dancing on tables here, but it’s fabulous for a lazy afternoon supping drinks in the sun.

Another bar that isnt a bar.. although it does have both a bar and an entire VW Camper Van dedicated to selling the best cocktails ever. Rhubarb gin has never tasted so good. Boho Eatery is one of the best restaurants in Nairobi, serving Vegan and Veggie food as well as meat dishes. It’s cocktail menu is just as good as the food and its a simply gorgeous venue. Open late only Thursday to Sunday, Boho is a wonderful Karen bar that’s intimate and refined rather than devilish and debauched.

One of the great experiences for safari-goers in Kenya is a visit to the Maasai Market. At these open-air markets travelers can find curios, paintings, drawings, clothes and fabrics with East African prints, jewellery and wood-carvings, many hand-made in Kenya by local artisans. You can buy all your souveniers and gifts in one-go but get ready for some serious bargaining. Enjoy the haggling and expect to come away with some great deals (keep in mind that it is their livelihood if they really stick to “no” you probably have gone below a price where they can make any money from an item). If you want to avoid being overwhelmed with attention wait till the market gets busy or if you have a choice avoid the High Court parking lot location on Saturday and stick to the Yaya Centre or Village Market days. You should also avoid “gifts” as you may later discover that if you don’t buy anything else from that seller, that trinket is no longer a gift.

It's always cool to support local farmers and small businesses. The Saturday farmers market is located at the KSPCA in Karen Nairobi. A 5min drive from Sharon’s cottage. Here you will find fresh produce, small crafts, herbs, etc. Vegan-friendly notables at the time of this review include a stall selling fresh cut jackfruit; a stall selling bentonite clay and diatomaceous earth; another stall selling tinctures and serums; a soy based vegan meat stall (also offering some hot food); and a stall specializing in 100% gluten-free + vegan baked goods. Definitely worth giving it a glance if you have a free weekend.
