If you're up for an active adventure, walk up to the top of The Pinnacles. You can stay overnight here in the DoC hut, walk the loop in one day if you're fit enough. Allow 8 hours to do the loop.

Drive north and spend half a day in Kuaotunu. Only a 10min from Whitianga, Kuaotunu is a small seaside settlement. Grab an ice cream from Luke’s Kitchen which are world famous for their size. Kuaotunu Beach is a shallow sandy beach with a river estuary providing kids with lots to explore. Dotterels (birds) nest in the dunes take care not to disturb nests. Keep your eyes peeled on the sea horizon for dolphins.

Drive north and spend half a day in Kuaotunu. Only a 10min from Whitianga, Kuaotunu is a small seaside settlement. Grab an ice cream from Luke’s Kitchen which are world famous for their size. Kuaotunu Beach is a shallow sandy beach with a river estuary providing kids with lots to explore. Dotterels (birds) nest in the dunes take care not to disturb nests. Keep your eyes peeled on the sea horizon for dolphins.
Take a 40min drive past Kuaotunu to Coromandel township. Walk through the town and visit the many art galleries here. Drive a little further to Driving Creek Railway where you can take 1.25hr tour through regenerated native forest over 10 bridges and 3 tunnels.

Walk into Whitianga
It is about 4.2km from the unit to the centre of Whitianga. There is a path all the way into town. Alternatively, take off your shoes and walk some, if not all, the way along the beach.

Catch the Ferry
There is a ferry available to travel across the estuary between Ferry Landing & Whitianga. Ferry Operating Hours: 7.30am – 7.25pm, 8.30pm – 9.25pm every day of the week. The last ferry departs Whitianga Wharf at 7.25pm before the dinner break, and at 9.25pm when it returns to Whitianga Wharf.

Located on Robinson Road just five minutes’ drive out of town heading towards the estuary. It’s a large reserve with little information boards, a stone store. It was the spot where the timber millers used to bring kauri down the river.
