Folsom has a rich and diverse history. While the Gold Rush significantly influenced it, Folsom's history was also shaped by the railroad, pioneers, agriculture, and business. Perhaps the best place to start is in Historic Folsom, ‘the place where the west came and stayed,’ and home to several historical sites, along with shopping, dining, and more.

Fishing offers trout, catfish, largemouth and smallmouth bass, or perch. Visitors can also see the Folsom Powerhouse (once called "the greatest operative electrical plant on the American continent"), which from 1885 to 1952 produced 11,000 volts of electricity for Sacramento residents. For cyclists, there is a 32-mile long bicycle path that connects Folsom Lake with many Sacramento County parks before reaching Old Sacramento. The park also includes Lake Natoma, downstream from Folsom Lake, which is popular for crew races, sailing, kayaking and other aquatic sports.

Johnny Cash Trail

The City of Folsom celebrated the completion of the Johnny Cash Trail on October 14, 2017 - a 2.75 mile Class I bike and pedestrian trail that winds west toward the Folsom Historic District and east toward the Folsom Lake Crossing Trail. The trail has two beautiful bridges inspired by the local landscape including the architecture found at nearby Folsom State Prison. The trail is a popular outdoor recreation enthusiast destination for walking and biking and local wildlife and inspiring scenery can be viewed throughout the trail. The City of Folsom is currently advocating for and fundraising to install a world-class linear public art experience that will celebrate and honor the legendary Johnny Cash, his music, and his history in the City of Folsom.

Pioneer Village

Pioneer Village is the outdoor interpretive center for the Folsom History Museum and the Folsom Historical Society. It offers visitors a variety of displays, equipment, and other exhibits, including an authentic, working blacksmith forge, all showcasing the different eras of Folsom’s development. You can try gold panning, walk through historic Folsom Station, which is listed on the National Register, examine artifacts from the old dredging days, and observe early construction and farming tools. On living history days, volunteers lead demonstrations in blacksmithing and gold panning.

Livermore realized that the water of the American River could turn generators for electricity in Sacramento, 22 miles downstream. With his partners, Livermore built the powerhouse, which still looks much as it did in 1895. The opening of the powerhouse brought with it a "grand electric carnival" parade through downtown Sacramento and a 100-gun salute from a detachment of soldiers near the substation. Vintage generators are still in place at the powerhouse, as is the control switchboard, faced with Tennessee marble. Visitors touring the powerhouse can see the massive General Electric transformers, each capable of conducting from 800 to 11,000 volts of electricity, in addition to the forebays and canal system that brought the water from the dam.

In February, 2011 the Center opened as "Three Stages at Folsom Lake College" and by the end of its second full season it had already attracted over 300,000 patrons to its offerings.

In addition to galleries and specialty shops, within a block or two of our venue, you can find restaurants, wine bars, pubs, and the famous Snooks Chocolate Factory. In addition to our theatre, Sutter Street Academy, housed in “The Annex” building directly behind the theatre, provides a wide range of learning opportunities for both casual and committed artists from age five to ninety-five. Our seasoned and talented team of educators offer ongoing courses in Acting, Improvisation & Scene Study, Vocal Music & Piano, Musical Theatre, Jazz & Tap Dance, and Visual Arts! Workshop intensives and private lessons are also available for students.
