This church was originally built in 1150 in Fortun; in 1883, it was moved to Fantoft to prevent demolition. Unfortunately, it was burned down on June 6, 1992. The fire is believed to have been deliberately started by Varg Vikernes, a Norwegian black metal artist. The church was later rebuilt (in 1997) in the same location in exactly the same way it was before the fire.

Parks & Nature
The Kollevåg beach area is located approx. 20 min drive from our home. It is a nice place to visit if you want to chill out at a larger beach or walk around a bit as the area is quite big.
Kollevåg is also easily accessible by boat as it has a large public pier where you can moor a boat. It will take approx 30 min with our boat to reach Kollevåg.
There is public toilets at the area and a large designated building where you can have a barbecue.

Nice waterfall on the way to Norheimsund, approx 1hr drive from our AirBnB. The waterfall is just next to the main road and you can easilly park just next to it.

A really nice waterfall, 'The Steindalsfossen' approx 1:30hrs drive from our home. This you can walk behind this waterfall! Good parking at the sight.

Another spetacular waterfall just 5 min drive up the mountain from the Mørkholsfossen on the way towards Norheimsund. Good parking along the road. 10 min walk on a gravel road down to the waterfall.

'The Vøringsfossen' is the most spetactular waterfall close within a daytrips distance from Bergen. There has been built a walkway and stairs around the main viewpoint of the waterfall and a bridge crossing the chasm over the waterfall.
It will take about 7 hours roundtrip to which then also includes Norheimsund and the Steindalsfossen and the Hardanger fjord area.

Vøringsfossen
'The Vøringsfossen' is the most spetactular waterfall close within a daytrips distance from Bergen. There has been built a walkway and stairs around the main viewpoint of the waterfall and a bridge crossing the chasm over the waterfall.
It will take about 7 hours roundtrip to which then also includes Norheimsund and the Steindalsfossen and the Hardanger fjord area.
Very nice & popular place to walk around and enjoy a nice coastal scenery with small beaches and botanical garden.

The sightseeing places I have highlighted are mainly our suggestions on sights to see & experience at Askøy and on the adjacent islands of Sotra & Øygarden plus a few daytrips from Bergen.

The most famous and visited mountain in Bergen. Easy accessible by the funicular from the heart of Bergen city. Lots of activities and play areas for kids and very nice paths/gravel roads to walk . Perfect also for families with a buggy.

Nice quaint town that houses a Maritime museum and a nice walking track. Telavåg is also famous for the Telavåg tragedy from the 2nd Word War when the town was completely leveled by the Germans and all men between 16 & 60 years of age was sent to the concentration camps after skirmish where two Gestapo officers had been killed in the area by some Norwegian agents & locals.

Nice quaint town that houses a Maritime museum and a nice walking track. Telavåg is also famous for the Telavåg tragedy from the 2nd Word War when the town was completely leveled by the Germans and all men between 16 & 60 years of age was sent to the concentration camps after skirmish where two Gestapo officers had been killed in the area by some Norwegian agents & locals.
Here you can take a small ferry from Hjellestad and over to Klokkarvik at Sotra. Hjellestad is close to the Aboreet, The botanical gardens. From the ferry terminal at Sotra it is a short drive to Telavåg.
This ferry trip was recommended by one of our guest parties as part of a daytrip where they explored the Aboreet then went to Telavåg before driving back to our house at Askøy.

The Lysøyen island is located 30km from our house (20km from downtown Bergen) in the suburbs of Fana. Here, you will find the idyllic 1873 home belonging to Ole Bull – the great Norwegian fiddler.
The villa has remained accessible to the public since 1973. Visitors come here to picnic in the gazebo, explore the 13 kilometers of walking paths, and relax near any of the multiple ponds found in the area.
On-site, there’s a museum that offers tours around the villa and its grounds. Another major attraction on the island is the Monastery of Lyse. This monastery is also referred to as the Lyse Abbey. It was founded by English monks in 1146 and is the first Cistercian house in Norway.

There are many visitors who come to this city due to its proximity to Bergen. There are quite a number of adventurous activities to indulge in around Jondal. The city has a wide array of historical sites and unique cultural attractions, such as the Agatunet, Norsk Vasskraft, and the Stiftinga Hardanger og Voss Museum. From Jondalen you can drive up to the Folgefonn glacier & summer ski resort in approx. 25 minutes.
PS: If you go here by car, you can combine the trip to Jondalen with Rosendal which is just another 1 hours drive from Jondalen. You can return by a quicker route from Rosendal back to Bergen than the one via Jondal.
