Take the parkway south and the recreation area has lots of trails on the ridge of the Blue Ridge and down to the river bottom about half way down the mountain. Tons of laurels and a strenuous hike back up the mountain. Great to do a hot day since it's mostly in the shade the entire time.

Roughly 30 mins from the house up hwy 89 to the BRP. Take the parkway south and the recreation area has lots of trails on the ridge of the Blue Ridge and down to the river bottom about half way down the mountain. Tons of laurels and a strenuous hike back up the mountain. Great to do a hot day since it's mostly in the shade the entire time.
There are a series of hiking trails at the Blue Ridge Music Center about 25-30 mins from the house - take hwy 89 north into VA and take the BRP north about 5 miles. The Fisher Peak Loop trail is about a 2.5 mile moderate hike through a pine forest and it ends at a really nice river and a picturesque open pasture. There is a great swimming hole right along the gravel driveway near a culvert that my kids always take a dip in. Great for families and dogs and a good quick get-away from the cabin.

Great spot to grab some essentials and is only a few minutes from the house. Great ice cream stand across the street! Sometimes it has odd hours and no hours are listed so....you are kind of never sure....love the country!! Also, they are a gas station.
