Food Scene

Excellent, authentic Brooklyn-style Italian food and pizza. The portions are huge (especially if you get the food to take out). If you are on a budget this is a great place to go and share dishes because many can easily feed two people. They deliver as well. The prices are good too.

The food in this tiny Indian restaurant is first rate! You would never think it by looking at it, as it only seats around 15 people and is easy to miss if you're not paying attention. Definitely worth it, if you like Indian food. And they deliver!

Bagels are just as good as La Bagel Delight (see other listing) but this place has more offering such as prepared foods, soups, salads, pastries, etc. There is a nice seating area as well, which La Bagel doesn't have.

The best breakfasts in the neighborhood and the cheapest! (A cappuccino to take out is only $2.50, which by New York standards is practically free!) This is a bakery/cafe/breakfast place all in one. Quaint atmosphere. It's a neighborhood favorite. Try the French Toast with strawberries and fresh whipped cream! The kitchen serves up until around 4:00 so it's good for lunch too. Bakery is open till 7:00pm so your evening sweet-tooth can be satiated! :)

Sightseeing

Once upon a time (like 1800's time) there was an elevated railroad line running along Manhattan's west side. The RR eventually turned into what was known as "the West Side Highway' but fell into disrepair and ultimately closure. But then a group of people came up with the idea to turn the unused elevated structure into a public park and behold! The High Line was born - an elevated public park & walkway that runs from the Meatpacking District to 34th street. It's well worth a visit . Start at the 34th st end, walk the entire length downtown and then walk back up through the neighborhoods below. There's tons to see & do in Meatpacking, Chelsea and beyond.

For a spectacular view of lower Manhattan, you can't beat the promenade at the end of Montague Street. Bob Dylan has sung about it, Truman Capote lived on it, Moonstruck was filmed around it, and it is one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in BK. The mansions along the promenade will make you drool with envy. I'm a big fan of walking around BK and the walk to Brooklyn Heights from my apartment is around 40 minutes. The route takes you through some of the most quaint, beautiful, historic neighborhoods and once you get to the Heights there is plenty to do and see. Keep heading north until you get to the Brooklyn Bridge and if you still have it in you, take the walk over the bridge!

My favorite Brooklyn neighborhood because it's so off the beaten path. And it's like walking into a time machine! Located below DUMBO, the quiet enclave still has cobblestone streets and houses that date back to the 1800's and older. Check out the Vinegar Hill House restaurant. There's also a cool and very authentic Buddhist Temple/Center - Dorje Ling - and they will let you in to look around. https://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/16/realestate/brooklyns-sleepy-enclave-vinegar-hill-awakens.html

At the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge in DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan/Brooklyn Bridge Overpass). Tons of stuff to do and see. Great for a day outdoors. Coney Island is Brooklyn history at it's most authentic. After you've had enough of quaint, tree-lined streets & historic architecture of Park Slope, get on the train for a different slice Brooklyn. Coney's Islands beach, boardwalk, and gritty streets have been home to immigrants and long-term Brooklyn natives since the turn of the century. The Cyclone Roller coaster is legendary & still retains much of it's original 1927 wooden construction! The Wonder Wheel has epic views, best seen at night when everything is lit up. Free firework displays every Friday during summer. And make sure to go to Nathan's for their famous hot dog and fries!

This former artists-enclave is almost legendary because of it's 'hipster' culture. In reality, it's an over-developed cliche of it's former self. With it's over-priced loft buildings, restaurants, bars, and shops, good luck finding an actual artist who could afford to live here these days. In the 80's you could rent an apartment for $350 (and I'm living proof) but since the real estate developers moved in, that same apartment would cost you 7X as much. Still, it's kind of a must if you want to experience the Brooklyn hipster scene. It does have some great vintage/used clothing stores if you're looking to acquire the Brooklyn "look". :) Good restaurants too, even if they're a bit pricey.

The garden is along the Eastern Parkway side of Prospect Park, right next to the Brooklyn Museum so you can make an entire day of seeing art and nature. The Cherry Blossom Festival is legendary if you're here in May.

Arts & Culture

My favorite NY museum. Wonderful collection of art and artifacts from all genres and it's free. Don't be fooled by the "Suggested Price" of $25. You can pay as little as 25 cents to get in, although I usually give a dollar. It's on the 5th Ave side of Central Park not far from the Guggenheim and many other museums. It's a must-see for artists and art-enthusiasts.

The museum sits right on lovely Eastern Parkway, adjacent to the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. Great collection of Egyptian, Oceanic, Japanese and African art. Good modern collection as well. It's the third largest museum in the city and it's literally minutes away from my doorstep! Admission cost is 'suggested', so you can pay what you wish..

The museum is a landmark work of architecture by Frank Lloyd Wright and is a marvel to behold from both the inside and outside. If you don't feel like paying the hefty $25 admission fee, it's still worth a visit to 5th Ave/Central Park to look at from the outside. Saturday is pay what you wish from 5:45 to 7:45pm.

The Whitney recently moved to a downtown location right off the High Line so you can kill two birds with one stone - walk the High Line first and then head indoors to see the wonderful permanent collection of modern and contemporary art. There are regular rotating exhibitions as well. Great views of lower Manhattan from several outdoor decks. $22 admission, but pay-what-you-wish on Fridays from 7 to 10pm.

Atlantic Ave is the dividing line between Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens & Red Hook to the south, and Brooklyn Heights & Dumbo to the north. It's one of Brooklyn's longest streets, running from Queens to the Brooklyn Waterfront. Lined with antique shops, boutiques, and restaurants, it's the best place to go if you have a hankering for Middle-Eastern food. It's home to the Atlantic Antic, a huge annual street fair. Although many larger, commercial stores are beginning to move in, it's still home to many small neighborhood businesses that retain the original old-world storefront architecture.

The walk from Park Slope to Cobble Hill is around 20 minutes and takes you over the Gowanus Canal, which is an interesting industrial area that has recently seen a surge of development. As you get into Cobble Hill, you will find a quaint, old world Brooklyn neighborhood with lovely tree-lined streets to explore. Lot's of shopping on Smith St and Court St., but also worth checking out the more quiet streets where you will find some hidden gems (restaurants, bars, etc). Great way to spend a day exploring Brooklyn and one of my favorite things to do.
