Opened in 2007 as the first brewery in Nelson County, Blue Mountain Brewery is a unique destination in the heart of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. All our ales and lagers are brewed, bottled, canned and kegged onsite in Afton or down the road in Arrington at our new Blue Mountain Barrel House. We have made our home for both facilities in beautiful, friendly Nelson County and are proud to be the pioneers of the Virginia rural brewery. Our two breweries will craft 10,000 barrels (310,000 gallons) of Virginia’s finest beer this year, made from deep well water and the best barley malt and hops the world has to offer.

Whether that be a forested trail, a mountain overlook, or a beautiful day trip to the beach, there are countless ways to appreciate the scenic landscape. And then…there are some truly thrilling opportunities. Take the suspended bridge over the Tye River for example. On the one hand, it offers a breathtaking view of the landscape yet on the other hand, the thought of setting foot on this particular walkway could make your head dizzy.
Located in Nelson County, the Tye River suspension bridge can be accessed from the Appalachian Trail.

Spy Rock Trail is a 5.7 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Montebello, Virginia that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail

James Dickie in 1752, 1758 and 1760. Grandpa James was required to begin working the land within 3 years. Our family has been farming this land ever since... 265 years and 8 generations. Now, that's sustainability!

Today, at one time or another, the third, fourth, and fifth generations of the Chiles Family can be found planting, pruning, picking, or otherwise providing fresh produce to Central Virginia and beyond. When you visit, be sure to say hello.
