The park was formed in 1905 from the grounds of 3 private houses, one of which still survives as a cafe. It is a local nature reserve on the river Lea/Lee.

Sightseeing
Stoke Newington Town Hall was built in 1937, designed by the architect J Reginald Truelove. It is laid out in a sweeping crescent shape with art deco motifs throughout and lavish portland stone dressings.
As you will notice from the date, when the building opened, the Second World War was just around the corner.
English Heritage has highlighted that this building is of particular architectural and historical significance. In 1939 at the outset of World War II, camouflage paint was applied to the outside of the building to protect against bomb damage. The paint is still clearly visible today. Due to the rarity of this feature, every effort has been made to protect the camouflage paint and to preserve the building as a historical monument.
The logic behind this appears to have worked, as although the surrounding area was badly damaged, the town hall escaped virtually intact.
George C. Carter was a councillor at the time and the driver for camouflaging Hackney Town Hall another building that was brand new and bright white. It was thought it could be used as a Navigation landmark by German aircraft. Efforts were made to minimise navigational assistance to German pilots. So it would make sense to disguise what might be a landmark. The text on the plaque would then be misleading.

The last old-fashioned pub in the area, it sells the best real ales at the best price in London, you can play board games, eat cheap and see people that you won't find in gastro-pubs. You can dine, have drinks while watching people and listen to nice music, and downstairs there's a little nightclub with different themes that seems very popular among those in their 20s - but there's one night for the "oldies" that remember Prince, Talking Heads, Blondie and the like
It’s a cool records shop, a bar and nightclub, all in one. Managed by music lovers who own its twin in Shepherds Bush, it’s even an improvement on that one, as it’s added a basement with a dj deck and live music platform, a very ‘90s chill out room and a recording studio/podcast space.

We are lucky that our neighbourhood is a melting pot of foods from the world: Thai, Vietnamese, Indian, Japanese, Caribbean, Italian, Chinese, even Austrian. Yet, Turkish food beats everything: in terms of the healthiest fast food you'll find in London (take a lahmacun or a gozleme to your London tours and save a fortune in overpriced meals or sandwiches near London's landmarks. Or come back from a long day of sightseeing and let the best hosts feed you and pamper you. I'm a half-Italian Argentinean Londoner, and the Turkish restaurants remind me of my childhood: generous portions, professional waiters and love for food from our hosts. And Testi is our favourite: they are generous with their salads and everything. Their waitresses are lovely, their food, healthy and delicious, as much for a vegetarian as for an omnivorous eater. We love them.
