The Farmer's Market has been an L.A., landmark forever! Art Linklater used to broadcast from there when I was a kid. Now it sits cheek by jowl with the The Grove, the city's toniest al fresco shopping center. But the Farmer's Market holds its own with butcher shops, New Orleans style gumbo places, bars, a great Brazilian gaúcho bbq place for carnivores, ice cream parlors, candy shops, bakeries, a wonderful European wine and gourmet delicacy shop, a crêpe place run by Philippine crêpe masters, fruit and vegetable stands with Southern California's freshest produce and lots and lots of places you can sit and talk and eat and be entertained by the passers by or dialogue with your table-mates.

L.A. is more and more a city to seek alternatives to driving yourself because of increasing traffic density and the devilish competition for parking after 5 PM. Guests to Catalina House are always advised to cut down on the number of cars they rent or avoid them completely because of the crescent density of KTown living spaces and the fact that the cars seem to outnumber the people! Why spend any of your time here hassling?

It has a film series (which used to be better than it is now) and a concert series in Bing Hall, a couple of decent places to eat and snack and, if the late Walter Hopps is to be believed (via his posthumous book The Dream Colony) Los Angeles is second only to NYC as a producer of great post-modern art, interesting artists, curators and critics.

The Korean club scene has its own rules and rituals but they are definitely not xenophobic and K-Pop is hot at the moment!

Along with Super King Market and Trader Joe's, it is one of my consumer's trinity of happy (and not too expensive) purveyors. I won't tell you what I get there on a regular basis because then there'll be a run on the items and they won't be there next time I go in hunt of them.
