Parks & Nature

Just west of the town stretches Portstewart Strand, a clean two-mile long blue flag beach, protected by the National Trust. Portstewart Strand has been the most popular attraction of Portstewart to holiday-makers for generations. Portstewart Strand holds the prestigious Blue Flag award for the management, cleanliness and quality of water and it is also one of the few remaining beaches in Ireland where cars still have access and permission to drive onto the beach- perfect for families who wish to picnic on the golden shores. Saint Patrick's well is to be found at the head of the strand, which was used in the 19th century and early 20th century for horse racing.

Beneath the Portstewart Dominican College is a cliff path which stretches along the coast from the Promenade to Portstewart Strand. From here it is a popular walk to the Barmouth, where the Bann flows out into the Atlantic Ocean. The cliff path has panoramic views across the Strand and Downhill with Donegal in the background. The sand dunes are a distinctive feature and are portrayed as Dorne in Game of Thrones.

Established for over 70 years, Barry’s is the largest amusement park in Northern Ireland with a range of indoor and outdoor entertainment. Located in nearby Portrush, this much-loved Amusement Park has become something of a holiday institution in its eighty odd years of existence. For many people Portrush and Barry’s are almost synonymous. Many locals remember being taken there as a child only to return time and again with their own children or even grandchildren in more recent times. But given its seaside promenade location and relaxing atmosphere, I am sure any visitor will have a blast!

If you can't head to Barry's because it is raining by the bucket load, consider the Jet Centre. In the town of Coleraine about 15 mins' drive away, it is family-friendly, weather-proof, offers an 8-screen cinema, a game arcade, 10 pin bowling, plus one of Northern Ireland's largest Indoor Soft Play & Party centres. The outdoor mini golf is an excellent 18-hole course over landscaped areas. You can easily spend half a day there with your weens.

Our flat is conveniently located just a mile away from Amici, which in our opinion is the best Italian restaurant along the coast. Located on sea front, Amici offers stunning views, easy access to the Portrush Ballyreagh Golf Course, and great good at a reasonable price. Reservation is highly recommended - and don’t miss the Arancini appetizer!

Open since 2014 as a wooden shack right on Portstewart Strand, Harry's Shack is famous for their scrumptious seafood dishes - definitely try the mussels if they are on the menu. Service is always great and the views of the beach and sea are simply fabulous. Craft beer fans also like their selection of local brews led by Kinnegar. Harry's also tends to be very busy so book ahead.

Ramore is a collection of restaurants located in one building. The wine bar is great for lunch or early dinner. They don't take bookings so I advise you to queue up well before 12.30 for lunch and 5pm for dinner - it is worth it. They have a pizzeria called Coast located in the same building, which is reasonably priced and also popular. If you have no kids or kids over 16 find tranquillity in Neptune and Prawn - we went there for our anniversary and had a special evening. The upstairs pre-dinner drinks/cocktails area is lovely.

Among the Ramore restaurants, the Mermaid kitchen & Bar deserves a special mention as it is our personal favourite! Mermaid offers a casual and relaxed style of full service dining but please note, it is a no-kids restaurant (with the exception of Sunday Lunch Service).

Sightseeing

Strictly speaking, Mussenden is not a temple, but a small circular building located on cliffs near Castlerock. But that doesn't mean it is not worth a visit. It stands proudly in the grounds of the ruined Downhill house, the previous residence of the Bishop of Derry, high above the Atlantic Ocean on the north-western coast of Northern Ireland. The Temple was built as a library for his cousin Mrs Mussenden who died at a young age, and is nowadays mainly visited for the incredible views across the sea to Castlerock and Donegal. If you are fortunate to go when the Temple is open, the visit will be even more memorable: Classical musical concerts and weddings take place in the Temple.
