A really cool old fort built on the Penobscot River. No gold here, but a restored fort with lots of nooks and crannies to explore. They often host special events (think pirates, or civil war reenactments or even "Fright at the Fort" on Halloween).
It's also home to the tallest observatory in a bridge, in the entire world. Great views after you take the elevator ride to the top.

Fort Knox and Penobscot Narrows Observatory
740 Ft Knox RdA really cool old fort built on the Penobscot River. No gold here, but a restored fort with lots of nooks and crannies to explore. They often host special events (think pirates, or civil war reenactments or even "Fright at the Fort" on Halloween).
It's also home to the tallest observatory in a bridge, in the entire world. Great views after you take the elevator ride to the top.
Really great walk along the river, through a working shipyard and across the Belfast Footbridge. Local shops and restaurants line the town side of the walk.

Once inhabited by residents but now taken back by nature, this island is close and you can drive over the causeway and park for a nice hike on the beach or head on the road through the center of the island.

A very nice local park with trails that lead down to the river.
A drive to the top takes you to Winterport's own organic, town-owned blueberry fields. During picking season, feel free to pick as many as you can (without eating them all, that's the trick!).
