Sightseeing

Amazing views...really! Only go on a super clear day when it's not too windy. But book ahead online to avoid the huge queues in peak season. The Panorama gondola over to Italy is well worth it too. Breathtaking!

The closest Hypermarket to Chamonix. Go here when you want a big shop - they have a huge selection of what feels like everything. Sallanches also had a hardware store and a full set of "regular" stores...it's not really a tourist town. Check out the nice waterfall off to the right as you take the Sallanches exist off the autoroute.

Boulangerie/Patisserie near the Aiguille du Midi gondola. I often buy bread, sandwiches for a hike or sweet goodies here. Lines can be long in the morning when everyone else has the same idea.

Entertainment & Activities

Our favorite tandem paragliding company right at the Planpraz gondola. Not as scary as it seems and really amazing peak experience. Paragliding was begin near to Chamonix. The pilots are super experienced, friendly and take care of you.

Parks & Nature

More than just hiking - take the Montenvers train up to the glacier. Linger a while and then head down to (and inside!) the glacier. Then consider taking a hike over Signal point to the Plan d'Aiguille lift (2.5-3h) and back down to Chamonix. Summer only of course...the trail is up and down but not extreme (I know those hikes too so just ask!). Gets busy in summer but always stunning.

It's about a 40 min walk thru the valley next to the river up to the Flegere cable car (or take the bus). Take the cable car up and there are a couple of very nice (summer) hikes: 1. The Grand Balcon Nord to Planpraz (and continue up to Brevent if feeling energetic). About 2-2.5h to Planpraz, goes up and down but not extreme (similar to Montenvers to Plan d'Aiguille but a bit shorter). 2. Lac Blanc. I think this is about 3-4h round trip - beautiful terrain - I've seen Ibex on the trail. Both are very busy in summer but still worth it.

A gorge in Servoz with a very well maintained footpath (about 1.3km each way). In summer the water level is natural so can be impressive after rain (and you don't need clear blue skies to enjoy this walk).

Probably #3 on my must-do list in Chamonix after Paragliding and Aiguille du Midi: - Take the Lognan gondola up the first stage - Hike to the Argentiere glacier - great views of an ice fall and the glacier being very dramatic. You can get very close which is cool - Walk back via the Refuge and have a drink or lunch - Take the gondola up to Grand Montet and admire the views, have a drink or that now late lunch and watch the rock climbers and ice climbers do stuff that just looks way crazy to me.

Across the border in Switzerland a pair of hydroelectric dams with lots of walks around. About a 4-6h roundtrip hike can take you do dinosaur foodprints embedded in rock. You can drive up or take the funicular/train/funicular (yes it's a bit too many interchanges for me but the kids will like it)

Hike or take the gondola up to the best place to see Mont Blanc on a clear day. The hike up from Planpraz is about 1.5-2h. The restaurant on top is a great place for a drink and admiring the view If you want the full experience, hike from the valley floor to the Parc de Merlet animal park (see other entry), then up to the Refuge de Bellachat and then along the ridge and the final push up to the summit. The beer takes fantastic after that hike. 6h I think but you'll need to be in reasonable hiking shape if it's going to be enjoyable

Very large section of the mountainside where they keep various mountain animals like ibex, mountain goat, deer, marmot. The animals roam free and are pretty well adjusted to people so you get fairly close. Entry fee. Nice for kids and adults. Good for a low-cloud day or sunshine

The glacier that gets lowest in the valley. There's a chairlift up to a chalet with food/drinks. There is also a viewing platform, one with a very interesting set of informational signs about the glacier and a couple of Air India flights that came a cropper attempting to fly over Mont Blanc. For those with more energy, a 3-4h hike up to the Chalet des Pyramides. It's a tough up-hill hike with great views at the top over the fastest moving glacier in the world (?)

Bar and restaurant in what passes in Chamonix for the nightclub section of town (don't get your hopes up too much...this is not Berlin). Several nice bars and restaurants around here.
