Food Scene
There are a lot of eating places scattered around the island. My favourite is Beluga cafe for a leisurely lunch, Mooring for a casual seaside lunch, Kai & Co at the market in town for healthier options and Antipodes in Black Rock for fine dining. Other restaurants such as the Nautilus, Tamarind and Little Polynesian also offer fine dining experiences. Surf Mist guests have also enjoyed a degustation of island cuisine prepared in house.
Within a short walking distance of Surf Mist is Wigmore's superstore who always have a daily supply of freshly cooked food. Vaima restaurant has a great menu and pizza for lazy days. Coco Latte is a wee cafe that offers a lovely breakfast and lunch menu.
Technically not in our district but almost! Halfway to town, this cafe offers amazing food and coffee! It is very popular. They serve breakfast and lunch. The food is different to what you can get in town and is owner operated. It is our go-to place when we need a bit of TLC.

Avarua District

It has kite-boarding, sailing, SUP boards, snorkeling, lagoon cruises, kayaking, swimming, good cafes and restaurants, night market (Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday), spas, museums etc. Definitely start here, try Koka Lagoon Cruise, book a kiteboarding lesson or try the Nautilus Resort cocktails. If you can, go for an early morning walk along this beach, it is stunning to watch the sun rise.....just a beautiful, is to sit and watch the sunset.

Muri Beachcomber

A bit more than a convenience store, Wigmore's has mostly everything you will need. Alcohol is NOT sold on Sunday or public holidays. On Sunday mornings, fresh and cooked food is brought in by various vendors. Most days they will have cooked food available as well. We always, always stop at Wigmores for an ice cream cone. Attached to Wigmores is Food Box. This is a takeaway hole in the wall that serves burgers etc. There is also a petrol/diesel station and a gas bottle swap. They also have a water filter tap for when you need to refill your water bottles. Drinking water should be filtered.

This is my favorite spot even though it is nowhere near our district. A place to meet friends for a drink. It is right on the beach! literally....like something out of the Caribbean. They have live music on Friday afternoons. The kids can play up and down the beach whilst the adults enjoy chit chat and a cold beverage. They serve good food (mainly fried) but very budget friendly. Definitely a recommended spot.

Ara TapuThis is my favorite spot even though it is nowhere near our district. A place to meet friends for a drink. It is right on the beach! literally....like something out of the Caribbean. They have live music on Friday afternoons. The kids can play up and down the beach whilst the adults enjoy chit chat and a cold beverage. They serve good food (mainly fried) but very budget friendly. Definitely a recommended spot.
Arts & Culture
This is an open theatre, live dance show. They serve local food buffet style which is delightful. Earlier on, visitors can take the village tour then join everyone for dinner and a very entertaining local dance. It is pricey but probably rated as one of the nicest venues for cultural environment and atmosphere on the island.

Te Vara NuiThis is an open theatre, live dance show. They serve local food buffet style which is delightful. Earlier on, visitors can take the village tour then join everyone for dinner and a very entertaining local dance. It is pricey but probably rated as one of the nicest venues for cultural environment and atmosphere on the island.
If Te Vara Nui is a little out of your budget (and it sure can be for some), go experience an island night at the Edgewater Resort. They have shows on a Thursday and Saturday night. They serve a buffet style dinner as well. This is budget friendly and entertaining.

Parks & Nature
Start on this side of the island for the Cross Island Trek. It is a good 1.5-3 hour walk depending on your level of fitness. My 5 year old managed it at a jog. My 11 year old thought she was going to die from exhaustion! Take a snack for the halfway point and lots of water. It is very rewarding sitting on top of the needle looking out at the vista. You pop out at Wigmore's waterfall and you can walk home from there...stopping for a swim and an ice cream.

This little oasis has a little Cafe in the back, an art gallery and there are a few other shops in the same complex. Most importantly they sell beautiful Black Pearls. There are many shops that sell Black Pearls, I also recommend Moana Gems about 200m down the road from Bergmans. Do stop for a coffee here, it is very relaxing with the vinyl playing in the background.
