Food Scene

A great variety of Malay delights and local delights along the street in the morning and even more in the evening. There is this best roti canai by the road side street vendor (Lyana Roti Canai) ...Roti canai also kneaded by Malay lady boss. And it goes with the best dipping sauce in town.

Vegetarian food is widely available in Malaysia. There is chinese and indian vegetarian mostly. Most indian shops serve both vegetarian and non-veg. For street food, order "kosong" or "mai liao" meanings you don't want the extra like prawn and meat. They will most likely ask if you want egg. Most vendor don't use pork lard as opposed to the old practice where pork lard is a cheaper alternative but do ask for cooking oil if you mind. Most noodle soup however use some kind of animal bones to stew. Back Home serve kinda off more healthy version of meatless meal. It is a relaxing home based restaurant and well worth a visit for lunch or dinner. Don't go too late. The lady owner like to close early as she has a long day already.

You can get all types of malay and muslim food here. A wide selection from Roti Jala, traditional food Peknga to Nasi Lemuni. There is a also a Chinese selling bee hoon which seems to be very famous among the crowd. Adjacent to it is the local wet markets to get fresh produce. Drop by to get some fresh local fruits and vegetables/salads.

In a relatively new foodcourt, Shariff set up another branch here. The queue builds up not long after it opens in the evening but the good news is it is never too long a wait. Not only is Shariff nasi kandar (a fusion of malay and indian muslim cuisine) yummy, it is about the most reasonably priced when it comes to nasi kandar....but which every stall you patron and you want prawns or sotong/squid, please ask for the price first. Other stalls in the foodcourt are just as welcoming. One guy sells fancy burger with a knife sticking right out of it....

This stall is not exactly on a street but next to block of walk up flats. There is perpetually a small queue. Food is simple tomato rice with a few selections of dishes...just a few but the crowd is still there for its simple malay food. I saw one teenager with just the nasi tomato!! This stall opens from 7:30pm till 2pm!! There are two stalls you can sit down to have your nasi tomato. There is one with the burger stall but I went to the one further down the same row as nasi tomato stall. This young malay man serve us one of the best teh tarik. no fuss, no frills, just fragrant and smooth teh tarik.

Famous for its Chee Cheong Fun (Penang style with prawn sauce), muar chee, chicken rice, Thai pork knuckles rice, Laksa and many more Penang street food variety. Can skip the Char Kuey Teow, Hokkien Mee and Curry Mee though. There is another coffee shop (Kafe Mandarin) behind it with just as many selections. The Chee Cheong Fun here is not as sweet as the one in Genting, has the more traditional flavour...also very nice. The nyonya kuih here has a better spread and I prefers them to Genting's. http://www.mypenang.my/index.php/where-to-eat/394-island-glades-makan-places

This is one of the afternoon market to grab local produces, your vegetables and fruits, just drop by and wonder through the stalls and amaze yourself with fresh produces from the tropical climates and cool highlands nearby. Next to it is one of the larger foodcourt around in Penang . Grad something here especially for lunch if you are heading out of Penang. You can get about anything from this foodcourt, from nasi lemak to nasi kandar to Thai food to economy rice to char koay teow, loh mee, wantan mee, nyonya kuih, chicken rice, indian mee. In the morning, only the Dim Sum and the Roti Bakar shops are open. Mind you it is crowded as locals loves to patronize this lay back place. There are also ancillary shops selling local biscuits. Grab a few packages of them. They are not so famous but just as fresh and nice tambun biscuits, beh ter sor, pong piah, o-teng, etc.

The Heritage are in the old Georgetown is the best place to walk around and experience the old buildings, living museum (i.e. trade from the old days but sadly sunset), wall murals, street food of Indian, Chinese and Malays (including fusion of Indian-Malay and Chinese-Malay food) and of course some good Chinese restaurants and western. You should start early in the morning as early as 7am when you rent a bicycle to move around. See the post of Getting around. Or just walk around and explore with zest. You will need minimum two mornings to cover it all. Starts early and you beat the crowd and the heat. There are plenty of food stalls in this old part of town. One of the best breakfast selections is the Chowrasta market. Chowrasta Market starts early in the morning around 6.30am, and usually ends around 11am. Chowrasta has two markets, one in the market building itself, the other the open markets by the streets. Look for an open eatery behind the market building, across the side lane, tucked in between the old buildings. If you see a flower nursery or a stall that sells plants, then you are at the right foodcourt!

Quoted from a tripadvisor, wanderingnomad111 New York City "Amazing chinese temple in Penang - not to be missed!” I visited this temple in August. Surprisingly, it was not very busy and was relatively easy to find. After walking through a side alley, I bought a ticket to the temple and set about exploring. The bottom floor of the temple is set up like a museum and explains the history of the Khoo's and Penang itself. The top floor is the temple itself, and was beautiful adorned with lanterns and intricate carvings. If you like to take photographs, you can take some great ones here. Overall, I found this a peaceful and interesting site to visit, and the best and most enjoyable place that I saw during my time in Penang. I would highly recommend it."

Parks & Nature

A sure relaxing place to just take an early morning stroll or evening exercise. Meet the locals and join them for Tai-Chi, vocal practice, hiking and just walk round and round...There is a bamboo park, an amazon lily pond, and lots of local floral and fauna. After a good morning stroll, as you exit the park and opposite the Indian temple, drop by BeeBee for a healthy capati or LSY Organic for a healthy breakfast. There are also two fruit stalls that make Pure fresh fruits smoothie. For a hearty breakfast, there is Big Ben Western and Garden Paradis next to it.

If you want to go up the Penang Hills in the morning, the strolling around and heading for the habitat will be ideal. Quote from Beanoo Penang, "The current nature trail as of July 2016 is a linear walk of 1.5km from start to finish which you can easily finish within an hour at a leisurely pace. The promise of the new attractions that will soon be revealed at The Habitat Penang Hill, including a tree top viewing deck and a canopy walk truly excites me. If the news is right, there will be other exciting things also coming to The Habitat. As you wade your way towards the entrance of The Habitat to escape the hustle and bustle of the Astaka food court and gathering place, you will find yourself absorbed slowly but surely, into the tranquility of the forest away from the chaos of the public spaces on the hill. Disabled / wheelchair friendly, this is a place to bring the family both old and young to truly experience the hill and appreciate it in it's original glory. "

A place where locals goes for a stroll or exercise in the early morning and late afternoon. Good fresh air. If you feel more energetic, slow hike up to 2 hours and it ends at a Chinese temple overlooking Balik Pulau...stunning view...but a good hike...for the fairly fit. After a good hike or a easy stroll, come down to the Air Itam markets and hunt for your favorite local street food, from Char Koay Teow to Herbal Duck noodle soup to yummy pancakes, and make sure you order kopi peng or "kopi O". Kopi O is our local espresso!! Kopi Peng is like latte ice!! If coffee is not for you, then try Tea C Peng or chinese tea (Teng Nan teh) . Or goes into the vege market, buy some local mints or lemon grass or any herbs, and let it sip in your black tea or just hot water. Yes, you can just order hot water from any coffee shop and you can also order Ice Kosong meaning just Ice and water in a glass, or order Ice batu, just the ice. Don't fret, Malaysian ice if tube ice are all delivered and safe to consume.

Sunshine Square have a good selections of vegetables and groceries. And fairly priced compared to the other supermarkets. Since it is a local Penang supermarkets, you bet you can get a lot of Penang produce here. Next to it are plentiful of eateries but I prefer the breakfast and lunch at the foodcourt across the entrance. If you are there...must try the rojak (fruits salads with savory spicy sauce and roasted peanuts). Want to milk a goat....or get an goat milk ice-cream or a yummy steamed brown sugar goat milk bun...this is the place. While at it, stop by the market and the foodcourt and grab some freshly squeezed nutmeg juice or the slow cooked red colored version. Just as nice but taste quite different. Also at the markets, grab some keropok or crackers. I love the potatoes crackers, so fresh and delectable. after you have tug in your tummy, head for the horse riding at Countryside Stables Penang.
