Food Scene

New chilled Japanese ramen joint just minutes from the house. Hai-Hai Ramen is a local favourite. Serving quality bowls of noodle soup in addition to other Japanese fare, Hai-Hai Ramen is a great spot to enjoy a bit of warming goodness or a light dinner option. The menu includes three types of ramen – a pork tonkotsu variety with pork bone broth, charsiu pork belly, black garlic oil and hanjuku egg, a chicken verierty with shio koji chicken, chicken and dashi broth and tsukemono pickles and a final vegetarian ramen with kelp and shitaki broth, tofu and greens. Each ramen comes with either a shio (salt) or shoyu (soy) broth – salt offering a simpler and cleaner taste while soy is sweeter and richer. Those who are after something other than ramen are catered for, with steam buns boasting either charsiu pork of tofu katsu available alongside sweetcorn with miso butter and chicken karrage with koji marinade and yuzu kewpie. All options are available to takeaway, with a lunch service to come in the near future.

Shopping

The original granddaddy of antique emporiums in Brisbane, the Paddington Antique Centre had been operating from under the blue starry ceiling of the old Plaza Theatre since 1985. The threadbare velvet curtains, faded stage valance and Juliet balconies are the perfect accessories to the extensive cache of memorabilia, toys, furniture, rugs, jewellery, clocks, furniture, weapons, musical instruments, art, lamps that are crammed into the 1929 built picture palace. Vintage clothing aficionados will find plenty to sift through here too, with almost an entire ‘vintage row’ of clothing from the 1920s to the 1980s at the far side of the theatre as well as a kind of glamour parlour of maxies, middies and formal gowns in the foyer. More than fifty dealers operate from the premises which regularly hosts exhibitions in the foyer. And to break up the browsing, try the charming little Plaza Theatre Cafe where everything is made fresh on the spot, just inside the entrance to the left.
