Arts & Culture

Nuraghe Arresi. You can visit Nuraghe Arresi, which is in the middle of Sant'Anna Arresi, between the two town churches. The 'Nuraghe' is the main type of ancient megalithic edifice found in Sardinia, developed during the Nuragic Age between 1900 and 730 BCE. Today it has come to be the symbol of Sardinia and its distinctive culture, the Nuragic civilization. More than 7000 nuraghes have been found, though archeologists believe that originally there were more than 10,000. More that 15 'nuraghi' can be found in the area between Sant'Anna Arresi, Porto Pino and Is Pillonis. Most of them are covered by dirt or scrubs.

Coi Casu is a work in progress archaeologycal site. Driving from Is Pillonis to Sant'Anna Arresi, You can find 'Coi Casu' on the right. About 1 km before Sant'Anna Arresi. Lot of ancient artefacts were found in this site. Nowadays the Nuraghe can be still visited. The necropolis of Montessu is an archaeological site located in the municipality of Villaperuccio, just 25km from our house in Is Pillonis (Sant'Anna Arresi). The necropolis is located on a hill, set within a large natural amphitheater, it has about forty domus de janas and is considered one of the largest and most important archaeological sites of Sardinia. Dating back to pre-Nuragic period (third millennium BC), this burial site was used for about a millennium during alternated cultures. Some domus de janas feature engraved patterns in relief such as spirals, concentric symbols and bull horns. My Tip: Cantina di Santadi and Santadi Cheese Farm are just on the way: Just saying :-)

Parks & Nature

The 'Dune di Porto Pino" are the 'must do' if you stay at our house in Is Pillonis. They are beautiful at sunrise and stunning romantic at sunset. Imagine a system of white and soft sand dunes, forest pine and crystal clear water. Many movies and TV adverts were filmed here. You can walk the Porto Pino beach and You'll find them at the end of the beach or you can drive in a dirt road and walk on a shorter track. Some access restrictions can apply in some periods. Please ask information the locals. I'm always available by email with all the information You need.

Spiaggia dei Francesi is a small beach set in between sandstone rocks (Us locals sometimes refer to this place with the Sardinian name of "Sa Bua"). It is one of my favorite beaches. In August can be very busy. We recommend visiting between May/June and September/October. There is a rock for diving!! Enjoy yourself with care.

Su Portu de su Trigu: Translation from Sardinian language means 'the port of wheat'. Maybe in the past was used to ship the wheat. Don't forget that Sardinia was considered the granary of the Roman empire. The beach is very small, water is crystal clear. The place is ideal for a picnic, snorkeling and there are a few nice walking tracks. A small kiosk open in summer offers drink and food. My tip: Enjoy an ice cold 'Mirto' liqueur at sunset and a chat with Massimiliano (Max) the owner of the kiosk and my old friend and school mate!!

Another pearl of the area. This beach is set in between sandstone rocks, dunes and pine forest. If You pay attention in detail, you can still see the sign of chisel used by ancient romans to extract blocks of sandstone used as bricks to built monument that made great the empire. Ideal when the easterly winds blow. If at the main beach (Porto Pino Prima spiaggia), 'scirocco'(SE) or 'Levante'(E) is blowing gale, you are pretty certain that this beach will be sheltered.

Candiani area offers a variety of walking tracks immersed in the pine forest. World War II trenches and underground bunkers can still be visited (Torch and care is recommended). Candiani is sheltered when the 'Mistral' is blowing (North-West wind). There is not a beach but a small area with pebbles in between rocks can allow laying out very close to the water. The spot is also highly recommended for snorkeling. The cave "Grotta dei Baci' can be accessed from there.

Porto Pino beach (Usually called 'Prima Spiaggia') is the most famous beach of the area. Unfortunately everyone knows that and in August in excess of 10K people can be there. There are few areas with sunbeds and chairs available for rent as well as kiosks offering food and drinks on the beach. The beach is sheltered when 'Mistral' is blowing, but it is very exposed to the easterly winds. In Winter/Spring/Autumn it is recommended for kitesurf and windsurf. And when 'Libeccio' is blowing from south west, that's the place to be for surfing 2 metres waves. Please send me a message if You need further information about best surfing spots in the area.

Seconda Spiaggia Porto Pino can be accessed from Porto Pino main beach. U sually is less busy then 'Prima spiaggia'. The less than 1km walk is really worth the effort and even in August You can find a spot just for You. White soft sand and crystal clear water are the scenario You'll find. When the majority of people leaves the beach, that's when You'll enjoy the most. I recommend an ice cold Ichnusa beer at sunset.
