Bairro Alto nightlife is less about mega-clubs and more about great drinks with friends that lead naturally to dinner in some of the best restaurants in Bairro Alto, followed by dancing ‘till dawn. Get the night started by making the most of the late-afternoon sunshine with an aperitif at Park. As the name suggests, the bar can be found on the rooftop of a parking garage, which means it offers incredible views out over the city – as well as a place to leave your ride if you are using a car.

This pedestrian street better known as “Pink Street,” since an urban renewal project in 2013, when the pavement between the terraces, bars and clubs was painted pink. It has become one of Lisbon’s most popular destinations at night, and is also an "open-air art gallery." This street is now the center of Lisbon’s nightlife. The New York Times even placed it among its 12 favorite streets in Europe. It’s a place that attracts locals and tourists, who stay drinking outside or dancing at a club until dawn.

Try a typical Portuguese liqueur! When walking to ‘Rossio’, be sure to stop at the ‘A Ginjinha’ cafe. This is a very tiny bar where a maximum of three people can go in at a time and order a Ginja. Ginja or Ginjinha as most people call it, is a liqueur made of a cherry-like berry called (not surprisingly) Ginja. The berries are fermented into a brandy that’s slightly bitter, slightly sweet and very sticky.

Lisbon's best club, with two dancefloors (one loungey, one sweaty) and a roof terrace overlooking the river. As the hip furniture indicates, it's a see-and-be-seen place, but the crowd is friendly and the measures Lisbon-large. House and guest DJs offer everything from electro and hip hop to bursts of '80s music. Thursdays are popular with locals keen on leftfield names; on Saturdays the place is mobbed by out-of-towners. Lux's programme - which includes live bands and the odd Sunday afternoon event, as well as big international DJs - and its catch-all social role remain unrivalled. Exude photogenic importance at the door if you arrive after 2am.

Shopping

Every world-class city has one—a shopping area who’s name alone is recognized for haute couture, high-end jeans and fine fragrances. Rodeo Drive. Fifth Avenue. Mayfair. Champs-Elysees. Ginza. Lisbon’s Avenida da Liberdade certainly deserves to join the list.

Highly recommended if you want a taste of portuguese tradicional cuisine! You can start with some salt prawns, and finish with a Pica-Pau with garlic rice and chips, accompanied by a beer in a tulip type glass. You'll surely leave the place very satisfied. A classic in the center of Lisbon. This is not a cheap eat.

It's an historical place and one of Lisbon's most beautiful restaurants. It's the former refectory of a convent, and maintains the original walls with colorful tiles from the 1800s. For that reason, and for the traditional Portuguese cuisine, it always attracts large numbers of tourists and locals. It was also one of the city's first beer houses (founded in 1836), and continues to be famous for its steaks and seafood.

Known for its fresh seafood (mostly caught in the cold waters of the north of the Iberian peninsula), this is one of the most popular seafood restaurants in Lisbon. Foreign visitors (Anthony Bourdain was one of them) are usually impressed by the food. Open for half a century, it attracts diverse crowds for its quality seafood and an authentic ambience. You'll just need some patience to wait in line... Closes in August.

On a good night, walking into A Baiuca is like gate-crashing a family party. It’s a special place with fado vadio (street fado), where locals take a turn and spectators hiss if anyone dares to chat during the singing. There's a €25 minimum spend, which is as tough to swallow as the food, though the fado is spectacular. Reserve ahead.

Owned by fado legend Argentina Santos, this place offers good food amid candlelit ambience; it attracts an audience that often falls hard for the top-quality fadistas (three singers and two guitarists per night, sometimes appearing straight out of the crowd). Book by 4pm.

For me, without a doubt these are the best ice creams in the Greater Lisbon area. They were first produced in Estoril in the 1940s by Attilio Santini (a native of Italy, naturally), who later moved to Cascais. From there, in the decades that followed, his fame spread far and wide. Today, decades later, Santini ice creams are still made by hand, in line with Italian tradition, to secret recipes – some of them with exclusively Portuguese ingredients. A tip: if you like wafer biscuit, order yours in a cone – the recipe for which is also exclusive.

A restaurant where the menu changes daily! By day this is an old-fashioned Lisbon tavern with traditional recipes; by night, it is a chef's laboratory, mixing influences from all over the world. – It's always crowded and no reservations are accepted, so go early. – Beyond dining, there is also a micromarket with quality wares.

Its battered wooden tables and chairs look as if they were salvaged from an old school, as do the maps on the wall and the slates on which the day's offerings are chalked up. The food is a bit different from your average Lisbon tavern: beetroot burgers, say, or salmon with a chia crust.

"O Bom, O Mau e O Vilão" the Portuguese title for the Sergio Leone film The Good, the Bad and the Ugly provided the name for this ambitious project, hinting at its multifaceted nature: bar, restaurant, film club and music venue, with concerts or DJ sets daily. Check the Facebook page for details. In contrast to most Lisbon bars, where house and electronica rule, here soul, funk, Afrobeat and jazz dominate. Several rooms feature striking murals by local artists.

Lisbon's most famous landmark looks like a small castle out of a fairy tale. It's a romantic architectural gem from the Age of Discovery that's classified as a World Heritage monument. The Tower of Belém was put up to guard the river entrance into Lisbon harbour. Built on the orders of Dom Manuel the Fortunate, it has stonework motifs recalling the Discoveries, among them twisted rope and the Catholic Crosses of Christ, as well as Lisbon's patron saint St Vincent and a rhinoceros.

Monument to the Discoveries. From the side, it takes the form of a tall oblong; at the base, sculpted figures of discoverers line a stylised prow jutting over the Tagus. They're led by Prince Henry the Navigator. Viewed head on, the monument appears as a giant sword-cum-cross, its point embedded in the riverbank, marking the entrance to the little exhibition space. Inside there's a lift to the top for fine views. As the sun follows its course, the shadow of the monument traces the progress of Portuguese explorers around a marble map of the world on the square below.

Portugal's first king, Afonso Henriques, laid the foundation stone for the first church of St Vincent 'Outside' - that is, beyond the then city walls - hardly a month after taking Lisbon from the Moors in 1147. The big draw are the cloisters, richly decorated with early 18th-century tile panels, some illustrating La Fontaine fables. Inside there's the royal pantheon of the Braganza family, the last dynasty to rule Portugal. The figure of a weeping woman kneels before the twin tombs of Dom Carlos I and Crown Prince Luís Filipe, shot by assassins in 1908.
