Ghent Illuminated walk Would you like a sparkling tour of Ghent’s most beautiful illuminated buildings and squares? Follow the light walk and discover it for yourself! Start at the Kouter for a walk of approximately three miles. The walk takes you past all the highlights of the Ghent illuminations. You will need about two hours to complete the entire walk. It’s best not to start too late, because at the stroke of midnight, the atmospheric lighting is replaced by ordinary streetlights. Plan your walk with one of the guides. When you click on the different stops along the route, a photo will open with additional information. Clicking again also gives you access to historical and technical information. The map not only includes the lighting in the inner city, but also important monuments, streets and squares on the outskirts. The first realisations in the suburbs include Pierkespark in the Brugse Poort district, the church of Afsnee, the Drongenplein square and an illuminated artwork in the De Porre Park in Gentbrugge. Do you feel like taking a longer walk? Then go and take a look at the lit sites on the outskirts. Put on your walking shoes Do you want to experience the impact of the lighting plan on the city of Ghent yourself? Put on your walking shoes and go for an evening stroll in the historical city. Join a guided light tour with one of the official Ghent guide associations (visitgent.be/guide). Or simply let this map guide you to the most beautiful spots in the city. The basic walk from Kouter to Opera takes about 2 hours. You can discover the other spots at your own pace. Make sure to leave on time, for when the clock strikes 12, the atmospheric lighting makes way for the usual functional lighting.

St. Nicholas' Church is one of the oldest and most prominent landmarks in Ghent, Belgium. Begun in the early 13th century as a replacement for an earlier Romanesque church, construction continued through the rest of the century in the local Scheldt Gothic style.
