It is based in the heart of the old historic town, under the Venetian wall and the Archaeological Museum. It is housed in a Venetian building that operated (in the early 20th century until the 70s) as a soap factory and is now a modern museum around covering about 1000 sq.m

The cornerstone of the permanent collection of this art museum, founded in 1992, is the oils, drawings and watercolours of local lad Lefteris Kanakakis, but over time it has amassed enough works to present the arc of creative endeavour in Greece since the 1950s. Temporary exhibits further keep things dynamic. Entrance is off Mesologhiou.

The Municipal Gallery ‘L. Kanakakis' was founded in 1992. It is housed in a Venetian building at the old city centre of Rethymno, below the Fortezza fortress and the Archaeological Museum. Its permanent collection includes paintings of Leuteris Kanakakis (oil, drawings, aquarelles) covering all his work. The work of various contemporary artists is also presented, depicting a wide spectrum of the Greek modern art since the 1950's. In 1995, Rethymno became part of the National Cultural Urban Network and, as a result, the Centre of Contemporary Art was founded.

Located in Rethymno, this museum’s collections have emerged through the quests of Greek artists from the 1950’s onwards, with particular emphasis on the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. The visitor can thus see adequate examples of Art from the second half of our century; from abstraction and cubism to neo-expressionism, representational art, minimalism, assemblages, conceptual art, photography, computer processed works. Usually, there are themed collections and exhibitions.
