Henley Lake is at the centre of a network of flat tracks winding through 43 hectares of wetlands and native plantings in Masterton, popular with walkers, cyclists, runners and families. The Waipoua River and Ruamahanga River flow along two sides of the reserve with excellent picnic spots along the banks. There’s heaps of birdlife at Henley Lake too - someone recorded over 72 different species of birds. The Henley Lake and Wetlands Trail, as part of Masterton's Recreational Trails is 3.6km. Entry to this trail is from Colombo Road or Te Ore Ore Road. Download a map of the Recreational Trails here, or take a look at the interconnecting Landsdowne Recreational Trail. Henley Lake is also the site of the ‘splash and dash’ event as part of the Wairarapa Balloon Festival. Balloonists test their skills with a flight over the lake dipping their basket into the water before taking off again.

Henley Lake is a favourite with both tourists and locals. The reserve has 43 hectares of wetlands and native plantings and more than 72 different species of birds have been spotted here. Viewing towers over the lake and wetlands allow for a range of different viewing perspectives. Take a meander around the lake and soak in the scenery or die the whole of the lake on well formed flat cycle/walkways.

Henley Lake recreation park covers 43 hectares adjacent to the Ruamahanga and Waipoua Rivers. It can be accessed from Colombo Road or Te Ore Ore Road. The lake itself covers 11 hectares and includes 4 small islands. The park has a network of limed trails throughout suitable for walking or biking, and also suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. At the south of the park, an extensive area of wetlands is home to a large amount of birdlife, as is the lake itself. Towers in the wetland area give fantastic views of the wildlife.
