The Finca Vigía, in the town of San Francisco de Paula, was Ernest Hemingway’s home when he wrote The Old Man and the Sea. (The novel takes place in the nearby town of Cojimar.) After you visit the estate, take a stroll in Cojimar and you’ll understand why Hemingway chose it. The wooden houses still have the magnetism of an old sea dog. In the back of the museum you can see Hemingway’s boat, Pilar, which he used for fishing trips and to hunt for German submarines during World War II.

In 1940, American novelist Ernest Hemingway bought the Finca la Vigía, a villa on a hill in San Francisco de Paula, 15km southeast of Havana, where he lived continuously for 20 years. Finca Vigia has made both the World Monuments Fund list of 100 Most Endangered sites, and The National Trust for Historic Preservation’s 11 Most Endangered Places. Finca Vigia is located in the small, working-class town of San Francisco de Paula. Built in 1886 by a Spanish Architect Miguel Pascual y Baguer, Finca Vigia was purchased by Hemingway in 1940 for a cost of $12,500. There, Hemingway wrote two of his most celebrated novels: For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Old Man and the Sea. A Movable Feast was written there as well. After years of Hemingway's death in 1961, restoration and preservation work has begun. Hours: 10 am to 4 pm, Monday thru Saturday. 9 am to 1 pm, Sunday. Cost: $5 CUC per person.

Hemingway's home sits on a hill about 9 miles outside Havanna. This was the setting for his book "Islands In The Stream". Now a museum with his home and artifacts kept intact and largely unchanged.
