There are shops, a video arcade, pubs and restaurants. During the summer months there are weekly outdoor concerts, movies and other family friendly activities. Most are free to the public.

A great way to experience the Hollywood sign is to hike there. It's located in Griffith Park. The trail that gets you closest to the sign actually drops you behind the sign, but most trails in Griffith Park will get you a decent view.
