Llangollen is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site along eleven miles of canal from Gledrid to the Horseshoe Falls via the spectacular Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Its riverside location forms the edge of the Berwyn mountain range, and the Dee Valley section of the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with the easternmost point of the Dee Valley Way being within the town. Llangollen is the home of the International Musical Eisteddfod (festival), held there since 1947 to promote international goodwill. The town also has a thriving tourist trade, located as it is on a main route into the mountains of North Wales (38 miles to Snowdonia).

It has a figure of eight walk that starts at 'Glyn Wylfa' in Chirk and passes through fields, along the Llangollen Canal and across the Chirk Aqueduct. This walk can be halved by omitting the loop from Chirk Bank via Rhoswiel, or by getting the bus to Rhoswiel.

It occupies a formidable position on the summit of a steep hill in the Vale of Llangollen. There is a 4.2 kilometer loop trail to Castell Dinas Bran that features beautiful wild flowers and is good for all skill levels.

The Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod is a music festival which takes place every year during the second week of July in Llangollen, North Wales. It is one of several large annual Eisteddfodau in Wales. Singers and dancers from around the world are invited to take part in over 20 competitions followed each evening by concerts on the main stage. Over five thousand singers, dancers and instrumentalists from around 50 countries perform to audiences of more than 50,000 over the 6 days of the event. Famous performers at Llangollen have included Luciano Pavarotti (who first competed in Llangollen in 1955 with his father and a choir from their home town Modena, and for whom the Eisteddfod's principal trophy – the Choir of the World Pavarotti Trophy – is named).
