Sarlat la Caneda. Medieval town. Pick up a walking tour of the old town from the Tourist Office, well worth a visit – market day is Friday. Domme. One of the many medieval fortified towns on the high cliffs overlooking the Dordogne valley with magnificent views of the river, also has it’s own caves deep in the cliffs. The Vezere Take a drive down the Vezere valley and visit Les Eyzies. Its claim to fame are the prehistoric cave dwellings accessed from the river valley up a quite steep set of steps. And then:- Roque St Christophe, has its underground caves with spectacular stalagmites and stalactites. Lascaux. See the famous cave paintings discovered in the 1940’s, visits are now only to duplicate man made caves of the originals (with a new one now opened) , quite incredible. We think that tickets are ONLY available from the tourist office in Montignac, but check the website first. Villars, underground caves with some paintings and stalagmites and stalactites.

Les sites préhistoriques et grottes ornées de la vallée de la Vézère constituent un ensemble de sites préhistoriques exceptionnels, répartis sur une quarantaine de kilomètres le long de la vallée de la Vézère entre Les Eyzies-de-Tayac et Montignac, en Dordogne, région Nouvelle-Aquitaine, en France.
