A 500-year-old pub with a great atmosphere. It’s really narrow, like a little corridor, and is so quirky. It’s right at the Limehouse Basin where you first come in off the Thames and moor your barge on the canal, your first respite from stormy waters. If you go through to the back, it looks out onto the Thames—you can see the trip boats go past. The actor Ian McKellen is a leaseholder, and he’s trying to keep it as a traditional old boozer. Go for the Monday night pub quiz at 8 pm. The first half you think you’re doing well, then the second half goes really left-field—it’s impossible. A great night of London fun.

Nearly 500 years old! A quintessential pub featured in Charles Dickens’ books on the river banks of the Thames

Owned by Sir Ian McKellan this tiny little pub is an iconic East London spot. for a cosy pint inside or watching the river (mid out for waves!). Grab a boris bike in Mile End and join the Regents Canal in Mile End Park. You can follow this all the way down to limehouse marina and along Narrow St to the Grapes. This area is also a fabulous spot to watch the Marathon from.

The only recommendation that isn't strictly local. This fantastic riverside pub is owned by British actor Sir Ian Mckellan. It's small and perfectly formed. There's nowhere better to enjoy a pint on a Sunday afternoon. If you're feeling fancy you could get the boat from London Bridge to Canary Wharf, and it's about a 10 minute stroll from there. It's slightly awkward location has ensured it's stayed off the main tourist route.
