竹生島（ちくぶしま）は、深緑の景観をもつとして琵琶湖八景のひとつに数えられています。古くから「神の島」として祟られ、人々に厚く信仰されてきました。 竹生島には、西国第三十番札所で本尊の大弁財天が安置されている竹生島宝厳寺（ほうごんじ）や、狩野派の筆と伝えられる襖絵の天井画がある本殿をもつ都久夫須麻神社（竹生島神社）があり、多くの参拝者や観光客がこの竹生島を訪れます。 また、竹生島生成伝説や弁才天降臨伝説など数多くの言い伝えもありロマンに満ち溢れています。

竹生島宝厳寺は、弁財天が本尊。今津からは伊吹山と重なる日置前という地域があり、春分、秋分には太陽が伊吹山の真上から昇る。 歴代天皇や弘法大師なども来島したと伝えられ、千手千眼観世音菩薩像や豊臣秀吉が移築させた唐門など文化財も豊富。出雲大社、元伊勢、富士山なども並ぶレイラインにあることでも有名。 Benzaiten is the principal image of Hogonji Temple on Chikubu Island. From Imazu, there is an area called Hiokimae that overlaps with Mt. Ibuki, and the sun rises from directly above Mt. Ibuki in the spring and autumn equinoxes. It is said that successive emperors and Kobo Daishi also visited the island, and there are abundant cultural assets such as the Senju Senju Kanzeon Bosatsu statue and the Karamon relocated by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. It is also famous for being on the ley line where Izumo Taisha, Moto Ise, and Mt. Fuji are lined up.
