This bohemian cake shop is just off Old Compton Street, Soho’s main thoroughfare and the heart of the gay scene. All the sweet, tasty delights come with lashings of unpretentious character and charming service. Grab a seat outside and watch local people going to and from work, gay guys strolling—you get all sorts. I’m a big fan of the vanilla slice—one of many wonderful homemade cakes and pastries full of all the lovely dairy and gluten that the faddy types tell us we should be avoiding. Piffle, it never did any of us harm.

This is a real Soho institution, I spent many hours here doing homework clocking up the caffeine. 130 years of family business. I totally recommend the Dijon slice and everything sweet!
Little has changed here in decades. It's a great stop for a pot of tea and a cake in Soho. Maison Bertaux was founded in 1871 by a French communard from Paris named Monsieur Bertaux. It is situated at 28 Greek Street, Soho, London, next door to the Coach and Horses pub; Maison Bertaux is the oldest pâtisserie shop in London.
