When I have guests for a few days I love taking them to Ravenna. There are so many reasons why. The city is not far from Bologna. You can reach it in an hour by car. There's free parking near down town. I know some good restaurants there and the main reason is: Ravenna is totally amazing! It is not a very known city. It remains out of the usual itineraries and thanks to all these you'll never find it crowded as Florence or Venice. Ravenna is different from all you have visited before. First of all it is much older than the rest of the "famous cities" because all the churches and buildings are from the V, VI or VII Century. That means 1500 years old. Can you imagine? Ravenna was the capital of the Western Romam empire and t is known for its well-preserved late Roman and Byzantine architecture, with eight buildings comprising the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Early Christian Monuments of Ravenna". They are all gorgeous!

Ravenna is a treasure trove of art, history and culture of the first magnitude: between V and VIII century capital three times, and the magnificence of that period has left important remains extant. Ravenna is just 25 minutes’ drive from the place.
