Check the website for weather conditions. Again, if you don't have a 4x4 vehicle you cannot approach the top of the mountain. There is snow on the mountain in the winter, so it is freezing. Take a tour if you want the best experience. You can drive any vehicle up the visitors center. There is a small mountain to climb across the street where you can watch the sunset or sunrise. Again , check weather conditions first. Its approximately 45 min from here.

Mauna Loa Observatory is a premier atmospheric research facility that has been continuously monitoring and collecting data related to atmospheric change since the 1950s. Ideal location for star watching.
