In addition to millions of tourists, the Borromean Islands also enchanted Stendhal, Liszt, and Mendelssohn. Dumas recalled them in “The Count of Montecristo”, Turner and Corot represented them in oil paintings and watercolours, D’Annunzio even tried to rent one. Just across from the town of Stresa (in Italy), the archipelago is easily accessible in just few hours by ferryboat from Laveno (via Istra) every 30 min . Also boat Luino, Locarno or Ascona. It consists of three islands: Isola Bella with its grandiose mansion and terraced gardens, Isola Madre with its luxurious English park, and Isola dei Pescatori, a picturesque fishing village boasting an ancient atmosphere.

A little island with the Borromeo Palace (it worths a visit!) and a garden nicely flowering in spring. You can reach it from Stresa. After the visit, I suggest a dinner on the Isola dei Pescatori.

Visit the enchanting Baroque Palace of Isola Bella and its amazing terraced gardens! Until 1630 Isola Bella was a rock inhabited by fishermen, with two small churches and a few vegetable gardens. The Borromeos, who had already been owners of Isola Madre since 1501, from the first two decades of the 17th century with Giulio Caesar III and Carlo III focused their interest on the island, launching the grandiose project that was to lead to the creation of the palazzo and the garden. In Isola Madre you will find a special English botanical garden and an amazing palace. The botanical heritage and the strong exotic impression have made it what Gustave Flaubert called “the most voluptuous place I’ve seen in the world”. If you want to visit the 3 islands we suggest you to spend the entire day sightseeing, for Isola Bella and Isola Pescatori half a day is enough. How can you reach the Islands? The nearest boat departure is in Imbarcadero of Stresa, where you will find the public lines (Navigazione Lago Maggiore) and the private boats. Along the lakeside of Stresa you will find other private motorboat lines with prices similar to the public lines (CMA boat company). If you want to visit both Isola Madre and Isola Bella there’s a combined ticket at a special price, for information and tickets visit the official website: www.isoleborromee.it For lunch or dinner on “Isola Pescatori” we suggest "La Pescheria" or Ristorante "Italia", for lunch/dinner or aperitif on Isola Bella we recommend RistoLounge Elvezia.
